I am going to pick up a new piggy (a nuetered male for my females) next weekend. The lady that has him in her rescue says that he is healthy, and was recently quarintined for three weeks. Do I need to quarintine him? The only option I have is to put him in the pet store cage (almost exactly a 1x3). If I make him a C&C cage I have nothing to use for the base of it. Any recommendations?

Yup quarintine him just a week or two so he gets used to you and stuff. The petstore cage won't kill him being in there for a week.

I'd wait for the members who are involved in rescue to answer, but since rescues must be meticulous in quarantine and health practices I'd say your new guy is most likely okay. If it were me, I'd still want to quarantine though, just to play it safe. You have a number of piggies you wouldn't want sick!

Ahh, the lovely Deluxe Guinea Pig Extra-large "home" from the pet store.....I still have mine too. You're right, it's about equal to a 1x3. I remember paying $60 for it. Maybe you could buy or borrow a large wading pool for your new guy during quarantine, and surround it with grid panels for security.

The thing is, it has to be cat-proof.

I would just use the petstore cage. Since you are rescuing him he probably lived most of his life in one a few more weeks won't hurt.

I'm assuming you have grids, since you said you had nothing to use for a base? The only other thing that comes to mind would be to build an enclosed 2x3 or 2x4 (depending on how many panels you have), and use fleece, newspaper, and plastic sheeting on the floor. Admittedly, that's a lot of bother and expense for three weeks. I'm ready to agree with Dagwell.

He acctually lived in a open barn with 23 other pigs.

And I do have grids, but the cage will be sitting on a table. so the pee would seep through. Maybe I will use like a tarp lining.

This is him:

HE'S ADORABLE!!! Can I have him (just kidding)

Hehe! He is cute.

That's a gorgeous color. My boys are sleek, shiny Agouti, but so dark that they don't photograph like your guy.

Does the rescue operate in a barn, or was that his living situation prior to rescue?

No, it was a sezuire from a breeder. The rescue is very much like Teresa's, and the whole adoption process was very hard, much more than the other lady I rescued from. This one contacted all of my references, vets, etc... the adoption applications were very long.

Wow, how nerve-wracking! I'm on my second pair of boars from CavyCare, so I must have been streamlined through the process. I did sign a lengthy contract both times though. Kudos to you for sticking it out through the process.

What a handsome boar! I would quarantine in the pet store cage for at least a week then start doing introductions. It won't hurt him to be in the pet store cage. Just give him lots of floortime.

He is a cutie. I just want to pick him and and hug him and not let him go:)

Slap. That is one cute pig! I too think 1 week is enough and the pet store cage is probably a suite compared to what he was probably living in at the breeders.

Soooo....what's his name gonna be?

Thanks everybody for the advice!

I am not sure on the name. His current name is Simon, but I don't know if I want to change it. Any suggestions?

He looks like a Buddy to me.

I'd spend a few days with him first and see what names his personality might suggest. Have fun!

He's a cutie. I saw a pair like him at the Toronto Humane Society. They were friendly but I didn't have room for two piggies. That would bring my herd to 4.

He looks a lot like a Gerald to me, or perhaps an Alphonso?
What a beauty, though!
