How long will males go through puberty and at what age? I heard it's at 3-4 weeks old when they start to get sexually active. Is this the same for females? When will the females pups go into heat for the first time and how long will that generally last?

By the way, I do have the male pup separated now. Boy, he wasn't happy about it. Every once in a while one of his sisters or his mom will start calling or make an "I'm scared" wheek. That just starts him wheeking- I couldn't believe the set of lungs on him! Let's just say, I didn't get much sleep last night.

He's temporarily in a pet store cage while I continue scouting out a new home for him. I have the wooden hutch in there, as well as a small stuffed gorilla (only 3" tall) for company. And of course, he has hay, pellets and water.

I have him out at least twice a day for lap time or to hand feed him veggies...it's just a long process. It's like me separating him reinforced the idea that I'm bad news. He'll settle down after a few minutes of petting so I think I'm making progress. It's just there have been too many times that I feel like I'm an "evil human".
Thanks for all your help...and putting up with me. I appreciate it so much.

No one can help me on this??

No, neither site has information on this.

Baby boars AND sows can become sexually active as young as 3 weeks old. It is not common for them to actually "succeed" in doing anything, but there have been cases.

They can continue to breed pretty much all their life - so for 6/7 years or so.

Sows come into heat *roughly* every 14-20 days, and its lasts for a day or two.

When sows deliver, they come back into heat within an hour or two, and the cycles start again from then.

Matt

Puberty and sexual maturity are two different things.

Boars sexually mature at 3 weeks old, so they need to be separated at that age to prevent pregnancy.

They go through puberty when they're around 6 months of age usually and then they want to be dominant. If you have two boars both going though puberty together, they may fight as they both want to be top pig. They're becoming hormonal and will be humpy.

I sympathize with you. It must be horrible to have to separate him from his family. I know it would make me miserable. Try to line up an adoption as soon as you can if that is what you want to do. Good Luck.

We have 5 boars. One is the father of the other 4 and he has been (fixed) we are planning on having the other 4 fixed when they are old enough. We are hoping that they will be able to live together happily as we have grown very attached to all of them

I understand the seperation part...I have 5 girls and 1 boy and had to seperate him from them when he hit 21 days old and had to wait til he was older to get him fixed so he could rejoin the herd. I built him a 3X3 and connected it to the 4X5 the girls live in so they could at least see each other and he would hang out there all day eating and rumblestrutting to the girls when they came up to the grids that seperated them.

You don't have to neuter them all, if they're just going to live together.
