Clearly this has nothing to do with TX Rustlers!

It has to do with taking information and then misinterpreting and misusing it.

Texas Rustlers, sorry, my comment wasn't meant to offend.

Mummy I wasn't so much offended as frustrated - We really believe that the karo syrup used for a short period of time, at the critical week prior to and a week after birth, is of benefit.

In fact, I would not risk not using it.

Do we know that sugar causes diarrhea, or is it that it feeds the bad bacteria in a piggy that already has diarrhea? I know that if I have a piggy with diarrhea I avoid starchy veggies and sugars, but have not experienced a piggy getting diarrhea from sugar

When we add it to the water, there is in some cases a neutered male in with the momma piggy, (if she came in with him and the time line is right for him being 'safe') so the quantity of piggies having received water with syrup is probably closer to 100, and again it maybe coincidental but none have experienced diarrhea

I reviewed the discussion on this same subject today, primarily between Kleenmama and Josephine on GL, and I am still standing by my, shall we say, lack of negative exeriences with the karo syrup and will continue to use it and promote the use of it, along with continued movement, continued eating and keeping the temperature cool.

I also read somewhere about giving them some sugar everday during the last few weeks of pregnancy to help with not getting toxemia. I really wish I could remeber where I read it. I gave my girl one fruit loop a day. I know its nuts but she loves it and it has some other nutrients in there to. Cavyinhawaii I am also wandering if you have notice that your piggie grooms you more often now ? Mine loves to try and lick my neck hands and my face. So I am assuming its her motherly instincts.
She licked me last night .It was so cute. Its nice not like a cat tongue.

TX Rustlers - I hear you. I think the risk is of sugar causing a yeast overgrowth, or feeding already existing bacteria. Like you, I withhold all veggies in a pig with diarreah, and most especially the starchy ones.

However, if this method has worked for you for so many litters, then obviously you're doing something that works.

I think many people don't understand the difference between 1tsp karo syrup in a bottle of water for only 2 weeks and feeding sugar in treats on a regular basis. This last habit smacks to me of risking obesity and diabetes. But then again, this is so common in the general population, and people seem to think that they're being kind by giving sugar :p

Holly did that when she was pregnant too. She was a very slobbery licker though so it wasn't very nice, but it was still cute. lol

I am still searching through literature that I have and have not come up with the source yet.

I also e-mailed John Harkness, he replied quickly tonight having just got in from abroad and stated that Guinea Pigs, unlike other animals, do not respond well to glucose or calcium treatment once they are already in ketosis, so maybe by adding it to their 'diet' was a preventitive measure.

I did ask if he knew of any risk involved in this protocol and did he know it to cause diarrhea.

He should reply tomorrow

Just thought I would update

It'll be interesting to know what he says. Once you hear, be sure to also post it on GL so we can document it in the medical information with its source.

And just to be clear for anybody who may misinterpet this, we're talking about a source of glucose for a pregnant guinea pig, NOT fruit loops or any other sugared treats :p

Hey. Just wanted to say i'm going through the same thing.
Awhile back my family rescued a guinea pig from a petsore that someone had returned. She already had two babies and was expecting four more. She gave birth to those four and we missexed one of them. That was completely by mistake. Now we have another one pregnant.:guilty: Shes far along, definitely 6 weeks, maybe 7. I heard a bunch of chatter going on in her stomach and can see them from a good distance rolling around and kicking her. I saw her nesting the other day like her mom did, so she's on her way. I'm hope she will have them this weekend, but I think it's a little early.

She's still a baby herself, so no motherly instinct. I will definitely handle her more once the pregnancy is over.

Wish you the best of luck. :cheerful:
