Potty Training

I'm currently trying to potty train my girls. I was thinking about buying 4 little pans, but then I saw that they were $7 dollars apiece, and just went with one. I figured it would take a bit longer, but I didn't want to spend almost $30 on them. So, I took the one pan home and put in the girls' cage, in the corner I normally see the most elimination. I put some bedding at the bottom, then filled it up with hay. I've been watching, and the girls seem to think the litter pan is for them to lay in! I walk in the room, and their either sitting there eating the hay like the pan is a hopper, or they're laying in the pan. ¬_¬ Does anyone have any tips on how to make my potty training experience easier for me and the pigs? Thanks!

Put some of their poops in them, and every time they poop else where, scoop it up and place it in the litterpan when they're watching..

I never got mine to be potty trained either. Simon just knows that he should go back in the cage when he has free range to go potty. Though he has taken a liking to under a chair... o_O

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do Ruby. If they pee when their out of their cage, I pick them up and put them in the litter pan. Hopefully they'll remember. Thanks.

Under a chair eh? Well Queen has taken a liking to the pillows on the couch...when I'm laying on them. ¬_¬

When I was trying to potty-train my two girls, they liked to hang out in their litter tray. It was one of those triangular ones and both pigs would end up sprawled out in it. I fixed this by making them better (bigger) hidey houses. I figured if their hidey houses were more comfortable than the litter tray, they'd hang out in the hidey houses instead.

It worked great! I don't know what kind of bedding you use, but I use fleece with carefresh in the litter tray. I think the difference in texture helps them distinguish between where it is okay to pee/poop and where it isn't okay.

Now I wish I could figure out how to make them not pee/poop in their houses, but I think I read somewhere that it's instinctual behavior and cannot be eliminated.

My pigs like to pee/poo in their favorite wood house, so I just put a towel under their house so they go on that. I clean up the poops every morning and wash it when it smells. It works pretty well, though they still go in other places.

Mine do theirs mostly in the corners. But it's really disgusting when I go to clean the cage!

I never trained mine but i plan on doing so with my new piglet.

Moppy likes to lay in the litter pan too. I think it's just something they like to do. I wouldn't be overly worried about it.

Mia (first piggy) only went potty in two corners when I got her. When Pepper came along, she untrained Mia. I put in a litter pan and they would go potty right in front of it. *sigh*

Don't go buy those litter pan, those little trays they sells at the Dollar tree works like magic for my girls now. I have 1 LITTER PAN, the ones thatcost $7, and I bought 3 $1 trays, about the size of half-sheet of A4 paper, has depth, and a shallower part for entrance.

Small cat litter pans work well too. I have one in each of my cages.

I have big corner litter pan. It 's filled with care fresh. The guys use it once in awhile but not on a regular basis. I clean it and put it back and just let them do whatever they want.

If you have a big enough cage you can get a storage bin, the size of a shoe box, cut an opening in it and put bedding in there. They will lay in it but have more space to lay and poop and not in the same spot.
