Hello all! I have 2 male guinea pigs just under a year old in a 2x5 cc cage with a 1x2 loft. I sldo have the fleece flippers. I had a corner litter box in the cage for a couple of months and they were using occasionally which I was okay with. I am using the Critter Litter (after reading other forums looks like I might need to switch). But, they started laying in quite a bit and I didn't think this was okay so I took out the box. Since I took out the box they have been heavily using the loft as a bathroom. So I put the litter box back in one of those corners in the loft. They haven't been using the litter box at all but still been going up there a lot. My fleece flipper is highly saturated with urine. Reading some of the other posts about litter training people recommend using the cafe of kitchen, we had one of those with the water, pellets and hay. My guys must be weird because that is where they go the least to potty. There is only like one little poop in there every few days.

Anyone have any recommendations for me? :) Options I have thought about is getting something bigger up there so basically when in the loft they are using a litter box. If I do that I don't really know what to use as litter. I am not a fan of carefresh cause my guys get easily irritated by dust, it tracks everywhere, and its so expensive! Not using a flipper up there and instead using towels or something I can switch out and clean more readily.

Guinea pigs almost never get litter trained. Some get it some don't. Their guinea pigs and will go wherever they want. My boys almost always use their loft as the bathroom. I have wood shavings up in my loft. But honestly I would give up trying to litter train them.

I think potty 'training' is just putting 1-2 litterboxes where your piggies pee & poo the most. Mine don't pee & poo in their food area either. They have a litterbox in the back corners where they pee, poo, nibble on hay & sleep.
At the moment the litterboxes have wood pellets, which are super absorbent & there is no odour. I don't like that they turn to sawdust when wet, but it's easy enough to sift out.
Chopped corrugated cardboard is also really good, pee goes to the bottom so the top is nice & dry, & again no odour.
And kiln dried pine shavings also work well.
