I was on petfinder and found this female guinea pig I really want. But I was looking and it turns out she is in a cage with a male(with cedar bedding). But I'd really like her. The shelter is pretty close compared to most only about 2 hours away. She's a very pretty long haired piggy. But I don't know if we can get her but I'd like to. So there is a risk of her being pregnant. Should I still see if I can get her? I don't want her to go to a bad home in a tiny petstore cage and have her babies on cedar bedding with crappy food. But my parents might not want another pet right now especilly one who might have 1-5 babies.I have enough space if she were though just not the money.I figure if she has female babies they can all stay in the big cage if I make it back to 2 2x4's. Then I have enough coro and grids left to make atleast a 2x2 cage. Then we have 2 petstore cages one thats a 1x2 and the other thats a 1.5 x 2.5/ We would use the bigger as her qurintine cage. Is the risk worth getting her? Her adoption fee is 20 dollars. Help is welcome.

Me and my friend i-love-nev have already thought of the perfect name for her also! We like Oreo Smores for her name.

I'm gonna try my best. I'm gonna get on my parents good side and offer to pay for gas and offer that she can be one of my only early x-mas gifts.

If she's living with a male, the chances are high that she is pregnant. In addition, you'd have to make sure you have a cavy savvy vet lined up in case anything should go wrong during pregnancy or birth and make sure you can afford the extra veggies and stuff she will need if she is pregnant.

You mentioned having space but not enough money. I know it's heartbreaking to see them in the conditions they are in, but you will need money in case there are any problems.

Well money wise as for cages but we have enough for the food. Maybe enough to take her to the vet. We also have a cavy savvy vet lined up. I'm not sure if the pig she's with is really a male or if the shelter just think he's a male.Veggies are no problem on average we spend about 5 dollars a week on veggies so a few extra wouldnt be much of a problem.I emailed the shelter about her and I'm still waiting for a response.

I've looked at a bunch of pictures and I think there may be a 75% chance that the other pig with the guinea pig I want is another female. I'm just guessing because in the pics the "male"'s bum doesn't quite look like a male. Its got a more rounded shape much like my 2 females. And this may sound weird but when I look at "his" face he to me has the face of a female pig to me. I just have one of those weird feelings.I'm still waiting for the shelter to email me back. But I'm 90% sure that the male might be another female.He/She also looks much older than they say. Which is also what is leading me to believe he/she might be a female.I hope he/she is a she though.I'm also hoping my parents will let me get the long haired one. They might let me get both if they are female but I doubt it.

Maybe enough to take her to the vet.
If you don't have the money for vet fees in case of emergency, my opinion is that you should not get her. One of the most important thing any cavy owner needs first and foremost is to make sure they can afford vet bills as you never ever know when an emergency will come up. It really doesn't matter so much if the pig in question is pregnant or not. If you have three pigs and one comes down with a URI, an abscess that needs treated with antibiotics or any other illness or injury, will you have the money (or your parents) to take it to the vet to be treated? What would happen if all your pigs got sick at the same time? Would you be able to provide vet care for 3 sick pigs? Can you provide vet care for the two you currently have?

Sure we all see cute pigs all the time that need loving homes and we want to do what we think is best in our hearts for these pigs, but you can't let your personal desires or your heart rule your emotions. You have to think with your head and decide if you can truly afford to take on another pig.

We could probobaly afford the vet bills but I don't know because I don't know how much my parents make. But I do know that most vets around my area will only make you pay for the medications up front. They have you pay the vet bill after the last treatment for the medicine. Or atleast thats what they did with my cat old cat.10 days of medicine for her that didn't help was about 60 dollars. It was I think antiboitics. And we can provide vet care for the 2 pigs we have and our cat and kinda the fish.I have thought it over and over the costs if we were to get the pig. A vet incase she gets sick or is pregnant, space for any babies she might have, extra food (veggies that last us a week cost 5 dollars so just a couple extra veggies wouldn't hurt), plenty of hay and pellets (5lb bags last a while here and we can get more when we run out), a new water bottle, a new pellet bowl, shampoo, a brush, extra bedding.Alot of the stuff we can get for pretty cheap and without having to travel far. The vet doesn't charge much but gives quilty care.
