I got frustrated with my husband tonight. I was telling him how worried I was about Shauna, and he told me that I shouldn't worry and she probably is just fat not pregnant. Well what if she isn't just fat and somethings wrong?! I need to be a responsible guinea pig parent here and make sure that she is okay. Guinea pig sows can die giving birth or the babies could die! If she is pregnant and the baby is too big and can't get out they both could die! I just hope she is okay, has her baby tonight with no problems and I can just relax! Just needed to vent...

I have to say that I would make an appointment to take her to the vet on Monday. If she is not pregnant, there may be a reason she is so big and biting (a sign of pain or discomfort?) when you try and hold her. This way the vet could be sure she is safe and healthy either way.

I rescued two pregnant sows. I do understand it is an uneasy feeling when you are not sure when and if there will be babies, and especially wanting to make sure that mommy is safe and healthy. Our sows gained a lot of weight and they had an obvious pear shape. They were uncomfortable being handled in the later stage (so we really tried to not handle to much), but neither of them were biting.

It just seems that you would have peace of mind if you went to the vet either way. Then, if there is something wrong...the vet can address it before there is a significant health problem. Good luck, and hang in there.

So, she was definitely pregnant... she had 2 babies last night!
Congrats!!! If feel that not a lot of people have realized what you said yet!!!! Haha, I still see people going about how you should take her to the vet to find out, I'm like people she said that there was two babies!!! Give lots of  to pebbles and her babies for me! Are you keeping the babies? That would be a good idea, there would be less fights and seeing that you only have one pig you should at least keep one of the babies! If you do sell the other one, make sure it goes to a really good home!

Wow, I am confused. I was responding to the last post on this thread, and I didn't see that she had babies. Sorry?

Now I see...Congrats TJJumper049!
To clarify: My recommendation to go to the vet was to Shauna&Kerri, who had just posted yesterday about her possibly pregnant sow.

Yes, I realised that I sort of high-jacked this thread from the original poster, but I had already put all of the whole story on here, so I have been updating my issue on this thread. I really didn't want to start another thread on the same topic and have to repeat everything that was already here...

The OP's piggie already had babies, my Shauna did not. Today is the 73rd day that we have had her, and if she got pregnant at the pet store the day we got her, then this is the last day that she could have a baby. I have never been sure about her being pregnant, although she has been acting very weird since she started getting big in the belly. She looks so much different from the other GP female that we have and they are the same age. She is only fat in the lower abdomen, and she looks lopsided most days, but then she moves around and then looks thinner, then fatter again. So it has made me think it is 1 baby, but I doubt myself all the time.

I have taken her to the vet 4 times since we got her for a lingering URI, and she has had lots of antibiotics. For a while I thought it was the antibiotics maybe causing irritation to her intestinal system and making her look bloated, but she has been off the antibiotics for about 4 weeks now and still looks big. Plus she was just a baby herself when we got her, about 2-3 months old, and so she has been doing a lot of growing herself, so it is hard to tell. The vet couldn't tell (she tried to feel for babies and got bit hard for it!) and we really didn't think an x-ray was necessary. Shauna didn't bite for the first month we had her, but when her belly got bigger then she didn't want to be picked up and started biting anyone who picks her up and doesn't want her belly touched. She will let you pet her on her head, chin, neck, back, but if you get near her belly she freaks.

I just would like some opinions here on Shauna's pictures. They are dated from July 3-August 17 and shows her one sided bump in her belly in some of them. It is the primary reason why I thought she might be pregnant. She has gone from 15oz (when we got her) to 1lb 12oz today. But I expected her to be gaining a lot of weight because she is a baby herself and is growing. Kerri is growing at about the same rate.

So if no baby comes today, and she is not pregnant, why would she have this shape? I have considered cysts or tumor, but isn't she a bit young for that? I mean she is just barely 5 months old. I will call the vet in the morning and see about getting her in. Could she be biting just because she is young, and not because she is in pain? Others have mentioned mites, and she was checked for that, but not treated for it 2 months ago. Wouldn't she be going crazy about it if she has had mites for over 2 months? I would think that she wouldn't let us even pet her if that were the case, and I would think Kerri would have it too. And mites wouldn't explain the belly...

Shauna, your pig does not look pregnant to me. My girls look like that normally. If you have concerns, please make a vet appointment and have her checked.

Yeah, the first picture, she does and then she really started growing a lot herself and as she got longer, her belly was harder to notice. But I think her hips have spread and she waddles a lot more than she used to. When she stretched out you can really see her belly stick out way more on one side. So if it isn't a baby what is it?

Can the babies come late?

That is what I want to know.

And I can't get her to a vet until tomorrow at the earliest...so I was hoping for some advice today from the members here. My other sow doesn't look anything like this. She is very lean and the sides of her belly are smooth, they don't stick out and she eats a lot too. Do different breeds of guinea pigs have different shapes? It is so different it really made me think that Shauna might have been pregnant. Not that I want her to be pregnant! I just want to make sure that if she is pregnant and is not able to deliver a baby, that I am able to get her the vet care she needs. I also don't want to drive her over an hour to the vet if it isn't necessary.

From my recent experience, she does not look pregnant. Here is a picture of Bella, one of my rescued sows, she is ready to deliver any day now from what I have read. This picture was just taken tonight...forgive her "glowing" eyes. Her eyes are red, but they do not glow.

Yes, I can see there is a difference in how our two girls look, but I have also read about sows that are carrying small litters that hardly look pregnant at all. Which is why I am so unsure...

Indra has big rolls everywhere but her butt looks like a big catch all for her weight when she hunches back to lay down/sit up sometimes.

On the other hand Lucy was skinny when we got her. She had a really skinny butt. So skinny it looks like she has two little butt cheeks. But then when you get to her tummy/midsection she is starting to get fatter so it just kinda poofs out on the sides.

Maggie just looks like fur with eyes.

Guinea pigs are built differently. Neither of mine are pregnant. I am not expert so I have no idea what to tell you based on the pics. However, your guinea pig, to me, does not look obviously pregnant. Nor does she look any different than Lucy except their fur type and color are different.

However, I am not saying this as to whether or not I think she is or isn't. I am just saying, to me it doesn't look obvious.

I hope everything works out.

I just want to make sure that if she is pregnant and is not able to deliver a baby, that I am able to get her the vet care she needs.

I believe that if she is not showing any signs of labor, she will be fine. I would also imagine that a sow could go past the 72 days (or go late).

I think that you are doing the right thing by getting information, and especially by monitoring her for any signs of distress. If she does start showing signs of labor that persists without delivery, then I believe she will have emergent vet needs. From everything I have read, the labor is actually pretty short when all goes well.

Keep us updated and good luck!

Hey everyone, I'm new to this form and still trying to figure out how to post stuff. I just adopted two female guinea pigs from have-a-heart adoption, and I was wondering if someone could give me some advice. They're mother and daughter ( not sure of the ages, but they're both young and I think the baby is over a few months old ).
I'm having some concern that the mom might be pregnant. She has the big belly sides, belly touches the floor, and she eats/drinks like crazy. I thought she may just be big from having the baby before but I'm not so sure. here's some photos I took of her. I'm going to make a vet appointment for her tomorrow. Any advice would be awesome. I'm a first time cavy owner

I don't think she's pregnant... she'd be a LOT bigger if she was. Strawberry only had 2 babies and she was SO fat that it was impossible to reach around her with both hands. She also gained a TON of weight in the last week before birth.

As far as why the weird lump - that would worry me too, but I don't necessarily think that it's a sign of a problem, especially if she's already been to the vet (several times) and the vet didn't seem particularly concerned about it. For your own piece of mind though, perhaps another vet visit and an x-ray would be a good idea. That would conclusively eliminate the possibility of pregnancy at this point (any baby would be very obvious on the x-ray), and if there is something else going on, it could possibly show that too.

I agree with the notion that some pigs are built different.. even my two babies, being similar sizes, are different shapes. My sow and boar are different body shapes too... even two weeks after delivery, Strawberry still has a bit of a belly and is somewhat pear shaped... and she holds her upper body a little strangely at times, making her belly look even weirder. There's absolutely zero chance she's pregnant now.. so I know it's not that :)

Thank you SO much, it puts a lot of ease on my mind haha :) I'm still going to get her checked out, but hopefully she's alright
