Hi All

First, I've been a lurker here since we got our guinea pigs and I found out here how to make the larger cages with the wire shelving units and coroplast. I am also very anti-breeding because there are SO many animals without homes which is why, even though we were concerned about the higher mortality rate, we had our male GP, Forest, neutered 2 years ago. Unfortunately, we found out after the neutering that the vet, despite his claims to have done this many times, didn't have a clue (wound up with his intestines hanging out and a nasty abcess) which we took him to a much better vet for. And, I thought that was the end of it, however, now it appears that our female very well may be pregnant! She has a definite pear shape to her now which seems almost like it happened overnight and the bottom of her belly feels firm. Any ideas on this? I am going to call up the vet tomorrow to see about having her checked but am just wondering in the meantime - anyone else have a failed neuter? And is it possible thats not a pregnancy, that it could be something else?

Hope that everything works out. So sorry your little guy had to go through that.

Unfortunately, failed neuters do occur. But hormone problems, including ovarian cysts, can make sows look pregnant. I think a vet check is a good idea.

Hope your Forest is doing better now -- poor little guy.

Willy had his neutering done twice over as well. Hopefully through promoting anti-breeding it will become a more familiar practice!

It does sound like ovarian cysts. That's a much more likely explanation than a failed neuter, since they've lived together for all this time without a pregnancy. How old is she?

She is a little over 2 years of age. Her nipples have become very prominent - could that be a part of an ovarian cyst as well, part of the messed up hormones with that? Her coat is good, no bare spots. Her appetite is good as well. I thought it was odd as well that she hadn't become pregnant until now either. My daughter thinks she can feels individual babies in her stomach but that could be power of suggestion at this point - when I felt her stomach, as much as she would let me, I didn't feel anything other than a firmness. I tried the vet but he was off for the holiday so I left a message and will call him on Monday.

We felt horrible about what happened to Forest - I knew there were increased risks because of his being a GP but so wanted him to have company as I think its cruel to have just 1. He was such a trooper thru it all and is doing great now; he's a sweet cuddly boy.

And I just wanted to thank this forum, the moderators and people who contribute; we learned so much about them here and, because of that, hopefully they're living a better life than if we'd followed the advice of pet stores and people who had no idea despite having GPs themselves.

Oh yes, enlarged nipples are a very sure sign of ovarian cysts. Is there crust on them as well? The "babies" felt were most likely the cysts.

A spay is the best treatment for ovarian cysts in a young healthy pig. You can learn more about ovarian cysts by searching at www.guinealynx.info .
