I love my little Hope dearly, however my little piggie has this habit of pooping in her food bowl. Anyone have any idea why she may be doing this? Also, what she does is sit in her food bowl and pee over the side. It is almost as if she does not want to get her backside messy. Any idea why she would do this? Does anyone elses piggies do these things? Don't mean to gross anyone out, but was just wondering.:yuck:

thats soo cute! my guinea pig somehow gets poops in her food bowl, and nt to make her feel embarrassed, but she sometimes eats them too!!!! gross. but yes, your gp might be a very clean gp, or she like the feel of food pellets between her feet. haha srry for the bad advice. i just think your gp sounds cute! -sarah and oreo

Our guinea pigs do that, I'm not sure why they just love to do it!

Also it's normal for them to eat their poops, they know which ones to eat and which ones not to eat.

Thanks so much for your responses. I do appreciate the feedback her. I did have to laugh at them though, lol . Hope can be such a silly little stinker sometimes. Thanks again, your replies make me feel alot better to know she isn't the only little piggie that does this.

I had to reduce the size of my pellet dish so my piggies didn't poop in their dish. I couldn't stand the poop in the dish so I was constantly throwing out food to keep it clean. Now that they have a smaller bowl they no longer poop in the dish. I actually have two small bowls of food in the cage now, and both are poop free!

When the babies were tiny, they used to climb right into the food dish to eat (and poop!!). As they got older, they pooped less in the dish. However, I think most piggies do it to a certain extent. I am always dumping 3 or 4 poops out of food dishes before filling them. And that goes for the boys' cage and the girls so it's not a gender thing!

Thank you Clotho. What you posted makes alot of sense. Perhaps a smaller bowl might be better for her. Maybe I could turn her other bowl up side down, and she could maybe use it to climb on to do her business, or even right side up. For what ever reason, she does not like getting her backside in it when she goes.:silly:

A smaller dish for pellets might work. Or putting less pellets in the bowl at one time, and replenishing it more often. I've just come to accept there will be poops in the food dishes LOL!

Seeing as they eat there own poops and its a natural healthy thing for them to do I just dump the poops out into there cage before I feed them. I got a bowl with higher walls and its seems to cut down on the poops that get flung in from zoomies and piggy laps.

I bought a bird food dish that hangs on the side of the cage and put a brick under it for my pig to reach it...somehow she still manages to get a poop or two in there, but it keeps her from peeing in it and it's much cleaner.

I've had my boys for 5 years now, and no matter what kind of bowls I've tried over the years, I just have to come to terms with the fact that they will somehow always manage to get poops in the bowl. lol

My boys will not eat out of a hay bin or holder. They will only eat hay if it is where they can stand in it. So, I bought a small cat litter box and put their hay in so it all stays in one place. Of course while they eat it they pee and poop on the hay. I fill it full, and I just empty it out and wash it out in the morning and night.

One of my girls always peed in the food dish and make a bowl full of non-edible pellet mash. It was discusting, but when I put the bowl inside large litter box that seemed to help. I do find a few poops a day though.

I find some poops in the food dish but I think most of the time they are there because they get stuck to the pigs feet and fall in the dish when the pigs stand on the edge to eat.

We have four pigs, and four different sizes of food bowls. Every one of them get poos in them.

I think (like Maisie said) they stand on the edge with poop shoes. Also, ours like to jump over their food bowls. So, I think some fall off of their feet, and other ones are like bombs dropping as they jump over the bowl.
