I was just having a bit of cuddle time with my boys when I noticed that Taiko (my black avatar silkie) had some dried crusties around his mouth. There was a bit lining the fur right under his bottom lip, and some on his chin. They were white in color under his lip and colorless under his chin. It almost felt like he had gotten white glue on his fur! His teeth look fine to me, both incisors and molars, and I just saw him eating lettuce, hay and pellets when I put him back in his cage. He's otherwise acting normally, but this just seems wierd. I couldn't find this specific symptom listed under anything other than drooling, which it doesn't seem to be. I'm worried because my vet is closed on sundays after 2, and so I won't be able to get in touch with him until tomorrow.

The only thing I can think of is that as a treat I sometimes give them a few small pieces of crusty bread to much on, and last night was one of these occasions. Although this doesn't make much sense, is it possible that he was eating the bread, went for a drink, and drooled on his chin leaving this residue? (sounds foolish, but since he has NO other symptoms and his teeth are fine, I'm trying to figure out any possible reason for this.)

Has anyone seen this before and know what it could be caused by?

Sorry I do not know. I know crust around cavies eyes are bad but I am not sure about under the chin and in the fur. I would suggest posting this at www.guinealynx.com . Good Luck.

The same has happened to Jasper! I noticed last night, I washed it off his lips but not his fur, and this morning it's gone from under his chin. It werid.

Bread isn't good for them. It could be boar glue.

Boar Glue????

Oh Guinea Lynx site is down at the moment.

Don't worry about it, Dagwell gets that alot and he's fine, just dampen it down a bit then use a fine tooth comb on it.

Glad to hear this is a common thing...I thought something was seriously wrong on the one day my vet is closed!
I'm confused as to what "boar glue" is, I've never heard that term before! Anyone want to hazzard a guess or knows for sure?
I didn't know bread wasn't good for them, I had heard that some crouton-like bread (with no seasoning, home made) was ok as a treat once every few weeks and helped keep their teeth trimmed and jaw muscles healthy. At the time sounded logical but now that I really think about it, I can see why it might not be good with all the yeast/flour/etc in it...guess I'll stop giving it to them.
