Urine Pink/Reddish Urine

Hi, I have a question about pink/reddish urine. I have a boar that is about two years old and he has started to squeak while peeing and the color of the urine is a pink/reddish color. (the squeaking is not that uncommon for him, just is now accompanied by the colored urine) This has all begun in the past day. I have read this can be a sign of some sort of UTI or stone issue, but he has no other symptoms. He is not lethargic, he is eating, drinking etc. And if anything he has become more chirpy. Is this someone you guys would advise I get checked out immediately or should I see if this goes away on it's own?

I have read that various changes in diet can cause this, specifically new/different vegetables from what the pig is used to getting. I did give him some different veggies than he usually gets(red bell pepper) the other day.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would get him to the vet. Squeaking while peeing isn't normal, and was probably the first sign of a UTI, with the blood now being an additional sign.

Okay, thanks. How urgent is this issue, out of curiosity? I am in college and live a few hours away from his vet. Is this something I should be making a trip asap to deal with, should I be looking for a local vet, or can this be dealt with later this week?

Also we have "snomageddon" happening in my region and the passes might be closed >_>. As well as people in Washington tend to freak out when there is any amount of snow on the ground.

I would look for a local vet as soon as you can. Your pig is in pain. Plus the longer you wait the worse it is going to get. He needs to be seen by a vet. Needs to get on antibiotics or checked for a stone. Good luck and let us know how he is.

I agree with suzilovespiggie, I think that he needs to get to a vet ASAP. I wouldn't wait because you never know how quickly things can turn for the worse.

He needs pain meds to control the pain while they diagnose what's causing it so I agree he needs vet care asap.

You need to go to the ASAP. Call around and see if vets know about pigs. He's gonna need pain meds, anti biotics, and xrays to see if there's a stone. Stop feeding any red or orange veggies for now. Make sure he drinks a LOT of water and if you can, get some unsweetened cranberry juice, dilute it, and get a few drops in him.
He is in a lot of pain so you need to go see a vet as soon as possible. Do NOT delay.

Thanks guys. Made an appointment at a local vet that deals with exotic animals and has experience with guinea pigs. Taking him there shortly. Hopefully the vet is as good as his normal vet.

Let us know how it goes! :)

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
Wishing you some luck because I'm headed to the vet myself.

Thanks for the advice everyone! The vet says this does seem like a UTI and now the pig will be on antibiotics for 5 days.

That's good news! A UTI will heal right up. You may have it reoccur if he had trouble with emptying his bladder, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

I'm happy to hear that your boar have go to the vet.
I've same story like you 1 year ago when my baby boy squek while peeing,
I took him to the vet, and the vet said he got bladder stone, vet gave me some medicine,
and Thank's God, two days after we visit the vet, my boy's stone came out while peeing.

Get well soon for your boy ;)

You're really lucky the stone came out. Males normally have a tough time passing stones unless they're really small. Did you have the stone analyzed?

his stone size about 0.5 cm and my boy got that when he is 2 months old. I didn't analyzed his stone because I can't find vet that could do that, the vet for guinea pig/exotic animals were very rare here :(
