hello everyone,

Ive got a quick question.

Every night between 2am and 4am, my pig (male) will start to make a seemingly normal squealing sound, however, it becomes more intense and is followed up by a loud barf/ hock a lugie/ spit out water sound. After the loud sound he shuts up.

When I investigate his cage there isn't anything there. But its really gross sounding.. Is this even normal?
Has anyone else encountered this?

I doubt he's lonely. I pet him for hours everyday.

Guinea pigs still need friends. Check out the social life page at cavyspirit. Do you have a c&c cage?

I'm working on building my own cage. I have the outside "cage" part, working on getting enough $$ for the bottom plastic stuff (and a coffee table I can sit it on)

Goodluck. You can get the coroplast at Kinkos, fast stop, (broken link removed) or any sign store near you.

Sounds maybe like it is hiccups. But I cannot be sure.
He is not making that sound because he is lonely.. I doubt it anyway.

harborsales.com is really expensive for people on the west coast because of shipping. Dagwell makes that sound sometimes too, I'm saving up to go to the vet, just to be sure.

Yes I know, I did not buy from harbor sales for that reason. Even on the east cost it was 50 bucks shipping when I just could of bought it from fast signs for 20 dollors and that is what I did.

Coroplast is SO expensive to ship.

Hmmm....Maybe it's a hairball?

Is it a choking sound? Maybe he wheeks so much that he ends up choking =)!!

The only thing that comes to mind is......Last night in the middle of the night a sound woke me up......sounded like a choking sound coming from one of my piggies. Now I have heard this sound before. I picked my head up but they both seemed to be fine. One was near the water bottle. I just figured maybe one of my piggies drank from her water bottle too fast and started choking. I know this happens to us, so why not them.

All I know is it sounds weird. I am fairly certain he didn't drink prior to his weird behavior, since one night he kept making the whiny sqeaks for 30 minutes before doing his wacky noise, and i didn't hear the water bottle at all.

i dunno. If he was gagging wouldn't somthing come up?

Why dont you keep a flash light with you one night and wait up at that hour and when you start to hear this sound. bam, shine the light on him.

Hiccups sounds good as suggested except if its every night I would doubt it. Sorry, unless you catch him in the act all we will be doing is guessing. But I am very curious myself to find out what hes doing.

Hmmm, this is one question that actually has me stumped. Does your pig ever do this at any other time?

And for your information, guinea pigs are very social animals and it won't matter if you pet him 20 hours a day, he still needs a friend of his own species. They do much, much better in pairs or herds. Please read over this page for more of an explanation.

The pig only does it at night, and when its especially dark. My pig is generally weird since during the day he sleeps and is far more active at night.. If you flash any types of lights on him he shuts up and stops what he is doing..

weird huh?

maybe I should get an infa-red camera and film him...:)

Are you sure this is a pig and not a teeny tiny cat? Lol, I'm completely stumped, as I've got two boars and neither of them make a noise that sounds even close to this one.
