what is a reasonable amount to charge a pet sitter for the following conditions?

daily visits
only two guinea pigs
water/pellet/veggie/hay changing
bed change every 2-3 days (fleece)
scooping poop between visits

how much do your pet sitters charge?

I had my pet sitter do the following:

  • visit daily to refresh water, refresh pellets, refresh hay and give precut veggies for 3 guinea pigs
  • feed/water 2 birds
  • feed/water/exercise 2 dogs
I was gone 8 days and I paid him $50. His mother told me I overpaid him but I think I got a bargain.

I didn't want him changing the cages while I was gone because I felt that would be asking too much of him (he is 12).

My sitter cost $5 - $10 dollars a day for my piggies usually, more for my other animals,(cats/dogs). I was recenlt gone for 4 days and I only payed him $20 for the piggies, and $40 for six cats. I didn't let him change the cages. Because I didn't want him to. I would pay the sitter more if you want the cages cleaned.

It would cost me £2 a day

wow! from the your guys prices, it just seems like it would be ten times cheaper to fly your sitter down every day. >sarcasm<

but thanks for the input, it will be really helpful

No floor time? :(

It's actually a good idea not to let your sitter take them out for floor time unless you are confident they are competent at it and you have shown them exactly what to do. Many accidents could occur during this time. They will be ok without it while you are gone, and I feel this is better than letting them out and taking the risk of something happening. Just my opinion. =)

thats what i thought - no floor time or lap time. It will only be for 6 days, and i think a week of no floor time is worth the risk of them getting dropped or something

Yep. I have had someone take care of mine, and they did not take them out at all. The pigs were, of course, glad to have their playtime once we got home, but they also were safer that way (I felt). Good luck and have fun on your vacation! =)

For me it's a pound a pig a day (heh) - this includes a small hutch with lots of hay/dry food/veg and the whole afternoon in a small run everyday. very good value. The lady who runs it doesnt cuddle them though. So if I left my pigs for 2 weeks there they'd come back a bit wild. hehe.

I have a dog, two cats and two pigs. My pet sitter works at the vet down the street and comes in twice a day. She lets the dog out in the morning and back in at night, and feeds all the animals. We pay her $15 per day. Sounds way more than a lot of you but I live in So. Cal. and prices are just all around high here. My last sitter was $20 a day so this is a better deal. It's also far better than boarding all those animals and they get to say in their familiar surroundings.

Also, no floor time for pigs when we're away.

Since it seems like it will be expensive (your pet sitter must cost a lot) for you to have a petsitter come and watch your pets, why not have your neighbor, or a friend pet sit? One time my neigbor pet sat for me for free. And usually friends are always willing to help.

I probably will do that. My friend a couple houses away just got a guinea pig, so by the time I'll need her to pet sit for me, I'm sure she'll know loads about cavies. what would be reasonable to pay a friend?

oh yes, i wanted to know. How long is too long for a guinea pig to not have floor time? I'm assuming there is some limit on the days/weeks they are confined to their cages.

Ideally, they should have floor time daily. If your cage is large enough, then I don't think there is any harm in lack of floor time while you are away. I was away for over a week and my sitter did not take out my girls for floor time. I didn't notice any problems with them when I got back although they were happy to be getting floor time again. If your guinea pig is not in a large enough cage, then a week would be way too long to be stuck in it with no way to run laps and popcorn.

I would say $15 or $10 is fine. And a nice thank you card and a souveneir from your trip.

In a 2x3 cage, is one week way too long?

$15 for the whole week!!!!! Sorry I forgot to say that in my post.

Mine were in a 2x3 with no floor time while we were gone. We do have an upper deck on it though. You can see a picture of the cage if you click on My Gallery up in the upper right corner. It is the one labeled Cage2
