I have anger issues with Petsmart. Yes, I bought all of my girls there before I knew better, but after having learned what I have and still treating my youngest for a very stubborn URI, I have made it my point to educate everyone I meet that buying from pet stores or breeders is bad news--and I feel like since I've been there, done that, people will listen more.

I still wouldn't shop there even if my local store did not sell animals (they just sell small animals, but that's bad enough)---they know I've bought my last bag of feed from them once I got them to pay for my $70 vet bill!

Ya some lady at the local petstore here (they supposedly take in "Rescue" animals) said that no one wants a full grown bunny. :( They have a male rabbit there for quite some time now and I want to take him home everytime I go there. I go and visit the bunnies, guinea pigs and other animals. There are two full grown girls (guinea pigs) that have been there since I can remember. The owners couldn't take care of them anymore. I want to take them as well. I was talking to the lady yesterday and said to her that they don't really profit off their animals. They put more money into the animals then they get for them (food, hay, bedding). I bought my 1st bunny from them before I did research on petstores. My lionhead was 7 months and had been there since October. We got her in April. I won't buy every grown animal from the petstore nor do I agree with "buying" from a petstore. I get my hay from them if I can't get to the feed store (no vehicle and it's oxbow). I am not saying at all that "not all petstores are bad" but I do support that the petstore here takes in animals that the Rescue can't. The rescue here doesn't take Guinea Pigs, they refer the petstore. I was looking for a rescue pig. A lot of the animals there are full grown. I don't know if I'd buy pets from them, but I would rather go to them then Petsmart for food or hay if I absolutely have to.

I got my girls from a little local pet shop as like many people i didnt know any better. Wow I have learnt so much in the past 2yrs.
My vets is next to Pets @ Home although they have a disclaimer saying that they have no involvement with the store or its products. I get my hay from the vets and cant help but have a peek at the animals in the store.
One day I was looking at the piggies and got chatting to a lady also looking. It transpires that she had bought 2 piggies the week before and realised they were sneezing, she phoned P@H to ask their advise on vets etc and they told her not to bother with the vet, just bring the pigs back and they would swap them for her!!!!! SWAP them???? like a pair of wrong shoes!!!!
I was appalled and asked the guy if the pigs had been housed with the ones they were going to 'swap' them with & he said 'well yeh course' and i said so they have probably got the same condition then and he just shrugged!!!! I asked him what they would do with the 'swapped' piggies and again he shrugged. The lady said she'd been told they would be treated and re-sold. I asked the guy - 'well is that true??' and he just laughed and walked away  i have not felt so sick and angry in all my life!!!!!!!! I was just as sad that the lady was willing to 'swap' them... i wouldn't have given my girls up after an hr never mind a week :eek:hmy:

OMG! That is terrible. I am now forced to be creative because what it boils down to it that the Petstores don't know much about their animals, nor do they care. It's sad. Just as I was talking so nicely about my local petstore, I went there and the LADY said the bunny can be HOUSED with the guinea pigs - ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!? OMG. Ya they genuinely don't care. I just said "I heard it wasn't safe for the poor piggy, being that rabbits are pray animals, any sudden noise the bunny can take off and the poor piggy can get kicked" She just said she's done it before. OMG!! Ya.. I'll make the hike to the feedstore, forget supporting petstores that don't care or know much about their animals! I'm not happy. Sorry, had to vent a little.

Our local Petsmart does not sell live animals other than birds, reptiles, and fish. It's a step in the right direction, but not nearly good enough yet. I also don't believe it's a corporate-wide thing, but rather this one store wasn't selling enough of them so they "pulled" them to other stores. The pressure on them to not sell live animals is working, but it will be a long, hard battle.
