Pet Stores Petland Employee

At my shelter, the only dogs/cats that get put down are either extremely contagious/deathly ill dogs/cats or animals involved in court cases. A court case animal is just that, they are currently in a court case, usually a mauling, and professional dog trainers care for them because they are aggressive. It is almost always a mandatory euthanization based on the findings of the court. When I say deathly ill, I mean things such as Distemper, Parvo, and Kennel Cough in dogs and Feline AIDS in cats, just to name a few.

Hopefully you're not misremembering, but they really shouldn't euthanize dogs for kennel cough if they're only doing it for deathly ill animals. Kennel cough is amazingly common, especially in shelter environments. The typical case can be handled with a course of antibiotics.

It is not typical that a dog at our shelter gets put down due to kennel cough, but it has happened. However, the euthanization was not based solely on that, there were other variables, like other illnesses and aggression. I apologize for not adding in the full story, but I think I have clarified it now. In my time working there, we have only put down a few dogs with kennel cough, but they also had Parvo. We had a minor Parvo outbreak earlier this year but it was contained very quickly. As I have been told, it was our first Parvo outbreak in over a year.

I want to apologize again for missing out of some information and not typing very clearly. I have trouble typing my thoughts because I usually have A LOT to say and I accidentally skip out on some things and it just messes up the entire post. Thank you for making this aware to me so that I could correct my mistakes. :)

FIV really shouldn't be an immediate death sentence either. Many of those cats can live long and relatively healthy lives.

Sorry for going so far back in the posts, but can you please explain how that works? I have heard of a kill shelter and a no kill shelter, but not a semi-no kill.
Another example would be the way most of the shelters in my area operate. They will euthanize because of serious incurable illnesses and extreme aggression (though that's very rare) but once an animal is put up for adoption, it will not be euthanized, whether it takes just a few hours up to many months to be adopted. There are cats and dogs at the Oregon Humane Society that have been there for over a year and are in no danger of being euthanized due to space or time issues.

I agree with you whole-heartedly on that.
I will admit that I do not know too much about the disease or why it is considered an automatic euthanization, but I think the cats should be put in special needs homes.

Wow theirs a lot of replies on this particular thread.

PancakesWaffles, This is a Pro rescue and anti breeding forum. It is also an anti petstore that sells animals. I think you've burnt your bridge by confessing to the community that you work for petland, which is one of the worst stores in the nation.

It is petstores such as Petland and petsmart that continues to buy animals from puppymills and from exotic mills.. These animals are not given proper care and the breeding program there is a "responsible breeder's" worst nightmare. You said that you will check into the kennel and the breeders on the paper, Please also check to see if the puppies ancestors also have the clearance of free HD and ED from O.F.A. I would also like to see the DNA to see if any of the puppies that your store are selling were the prodigy of incest or heavily line breeding, which causes severe health problems as the puppy ages.

Petstores claiming that they buy their animals from responsible breeders are full of crap. It's misleading and are lying to the public. A responsible breeder would NEVER EVER allow any of their puppies to be handed down to a petstore.

Can you still support petland selling puppymills puppies knowing that this is happening every single day?

Nobody is faulting you for working but since you work for petland you support the company for what they do.

To this comment and many others made previously -- no one burns their bridges here in such a way. She is just like many, many other people and members who think that their individual actions help the situation--either buy "adopting" one of those "needy" animals at the pet store and giving them a chance or by working at a pet store and trying to educate the consumers and be a good influence.

It takes a very mature understanding of the issues to realize that both of those things are not only fruitless, they only contribute to the problem rather than helping it. Many kids are able to understand this concept, while many adults are not. It's not an issue of age, it's something more than that. And it's not about a person's overall maturity level, it's probably more about life's experiences, readings, understandings, etc. If it were definable, we'd have long ago been able to solve the challenges.

I don't want to see people personally faulted for not achieving this level of understanding. Yes, do everything you can to open their eyes and help them see the bigger issues, but let's please keep it objective and not personal. There is no need for it.

I envy your zen. I strive for it but never get there for more than 5 minutes at a time. The rest of the time I'm a giant ball of spite and rage. It's quite bad for stomach acid levels, I really recommend against it as a way of life.

In my experience, the employees at even the worst pet stores are primarily just misguided folks who think they are helping. Even at the puppy mill store in the mall near me most of the employees seem to really love animals.

They just don't "get it." I try to remind myself of when I didn't, and of all the ways I probably still don't.

The Petland near me I think is the worst petstore I've been to. There was DOG POOP on the floor! right by the doog food. There guinea pigs were in glass cases with open tops so little kids can come and pick them up and doomed to be dropped. The dogs are in glass cases too. Large sized dogs (german shepard cross) put into cages the size of a 3x6 guinea pig cage! I wrote an email to them saying suggestions for improvments.

I bought 2 guinea pigs from pet land(before I knew it was bad, and then I stopped going there after this...) one of them (Dizzy) is alive today, the other, is not. I went to pet land and found a cute female guinea pig and looked at the others in the cage. ALL BOYS. she looked overweight, but she was still cute. I wanted to buy her because
!. she was really cute
2. I wanted to get her away from that place
3. I didn't know that it was even bad
4. she had a great personality
I brought her home and in 3 months I discovered she was pregnant. a month later she had 3 piggies, and died. the last one was so big an she lost so much blood, she died. On the paper I recieved when I bought them, it said to go to that exact store (which was across town) and to get your money back,if something happened to the pet. I went there and they said "Where's your proof that she's dead?" and so it turns out I HAVE TO DIG HER UP( she was already underground)AND TAKE HER TO THE PLACE. So I went all the way across town, dug her up brought her in a bag and when i went there a second time and they didn't even look in the bag. Not a GLANCE! They gave my money back and the lady said "Would you like to buy another one?" and I said "No! Not here anyway!" I forgot to mention this, The pet store lady said the pig I bought was actually a rescue, and was from a home with a male guinea pig also. I thought they meant in different cages, but NO. so i had to bottle feed the babies at 3.00am, 12.00 am, all the time.

I still don't agree that Petland is okay. I go into my local one occassionally and it makes me what to cry. The dogs and cats are kept in small cages in the wall. They can only look out into the rest of the store through a glass window - the rest is just wall. It's hard to explain so I've attached a picture. It's gross but each time I've gone in there, I've seen at least one puppy eating it's poop :sick:And the birds and small animals are kept in aquariums on wheels!! With an open top!! I've seen kids climb up the sides to try and hold hamsters and the cage started rolling. My Petland also puts rabbits in with baby guinea pigs. A lot of the time, some breed of animals is sneezing and has a running nose. My Grandma is also friends with someone who breeds guinea pigs - or use to anyways, and she sold them to Petland. I have four pictures of inside the store where I live. Please rethink your thoughts about Petland, it really isn't a good place.

Another thing I'd like to add is that over the summer there were some issues with Petland because someone stole a bird. They stuck it in their purse drove off. Something that could happen more with open top cages. And great job of noticing someone sticking a parrot in their purse, Petland staff!

Its so sad if you just think: those poor puppies living in a glass tank for at least 4 months with no out time (Only on holding time). Its horrbile. A happy puppy has a whole house to run in, a backyard to play in, and humans to love him.

Your Petland looks a lot nicer than the ones here .. They still suck but ours are usually dirty, paint peeling, the dog tanks are even smaller! They def. don't have beds or anything soft to lay on. So are the rabbit/gp ones. It usually smells too. Then the cats / kittens are crammed together.
