Petland Employee Part Two

I work at Petland, and tonight I decided I would give some of the baby guinea pigs some love. I decided I would sex them, to be sure they were all girls like we claim they are. They, in fact, were not all girls. 2 out of 6 were DEFINITELY boys.

At first I only found one boy, so I figured that people make mistakes and I decided to let my supervisor know. The conversation was NOT how I expected it to be.

Me, holding piggy: "One of our guinea pigs is a boy"

Manager: "Ooooh?"

Me: "Shouldn't we take him to the other Petland???"
(The other Petland has all boys.. apparently)

Manager: "No" :eye-poppi

Me: "Well what happens when somebody buys a girl, and comes back here with babies?"

Manager: "Then they can surrender them. We don't guarantee sex anyways."

Me: "I guess that means more money for us"

So I sexed the rest of them, and found another boy.

I am going in tomorrow to talk to my store manager. How should I go about it?

What makes me the most angry is that he now knows we have two boys, they should be at the other store, not impregnating the sows at my store. Also, what happens when somebody inexperienced buys a pregnant guinea pig, has no idea to do when she starts delivering babies and something goes wrong :weepy:

Yup, that's why we don't support pet stores here. The new owners could not even know their sow is pregnant and might lose her and the babies.
I would tell the manager of the risks to the female's health. Hopefully he cares.

Your rosy outlook of Petland from a couple of months ago seems to have changed.

Honesty and directness is usually the best option. However, I doubt your manager, or even corporate headquarters, will care. They are NOT what you tried to paint them to be or what you were told. They are a business and missexed animals are not a priority, money is. As you said, it may even create more money when people surrender the babies.

If they don't care that they buy from irresponsible breeders then why would they care is someone buys a pregnant animal?

You can try to get a positive outcome from Petland and, I certainly hope you do, but I feel it's unlikely. Your time would be better spent exposing them for their misdeeds. Unfortunately, if you continue to actually care about the animals and speak out for them to your employers, your job will be short lived.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes many of us here so furious and frustrated with pet stores too. They simply DO NOT CARE. I'm sorry you are finding this out the hard way, but I wish you luck in talking to your manager and getting the animals properly separated. If this does not help, go higher. As VJ says, though, you may well find your job on the line.

I'm glad you're starting to see the light. You know what I would do? Start looking for another job. There is no way I would even be able to sleep at night thinking about these types of things. I know that there is a job shortage, but it's not worth losing sleep over. Plus, I would rather work somewhere else where I make a bit less than promote Petland.:sorry:

I'm sorry that you have to deal with all of this. You seem like you're the only one that cares about the animals. They just see them as dollar signs like all the other pet stores that sell animals. Don't they have hearts? No. That's why they say "The can just surrender the babies to us" That way, they'll get more money without having to order another shipment of pigs. It's sad and sick. :weepy:

 I'll stop there.

I thought you were defending Petland in your other threads. Drastic change, huh?

Why don't you explain what you discovered, the negative effects (what might happen if nothing is changed), and your suggestions for improvement. Also explain why it is unethical.

If I were you, I'd look for a different job. Maybe at a humane society?

>(Ugh makes me too angry so I won't go on.

I have not read your 'Part One' discussion of being a PetLand employee, but it seems that you used to have an open mind about PetLand.

As far as I'm concerned, PetLand is probably one of the worst pet stores, at least, in my area. Even though PetSmart is bad, I would rather go there than PetLand. The animals are skinny, the place is extremely loud, the dogs are in what is basically aquarium tanks, and the employees could care less.

My friend Katrina bought her guinea pigs from a pet store and they are healthy but they have a lack of vitamin C so they have special medicine. But when she bought them, they both were going to have babies. When she came home, They were already born. Her guinea pigs are still living but just with a cold. I still do NOT support pet store guinea pigs even though some of them are healthy
