So what do you all have to say about Peter Gurney...Alot of his advice conflicts with the advice given here. I'v eused advice from both here and there...check it out... (broken link removed)

Tell me what you think!

Peter Gurney is an idiot. That is my personal opinion of him. This site gives good advise, where his is very iffy.

Uuuggg. That's what I think of him.

I have had to help undo more harm caused by his advice in those stupid books he writes, then profesional Therepy has had to to UNDO what Lucy did to Linus.

If that doesn't make sense then you weren't a Peanuts comic fan.

I'm still learning about guinea pigs. But I heard alot of bad things about him. I don't think I will read anything on his website or believe anything he has to say.

Gotcha...LOL Was just wondering..some of his advice worked wonders but I'm not brave enough to try some of the other advice. Kind of scary..Yep...I am a Peanuts fan!

I thought Peter Gurney was okay. Why do you think he's bad?

The info you read on Guinea Lynx has been referenced from medical texts or first hand accounts from owners/rescuers with their veterinarians.

I always thought he was ok. I do find the homemade remedies a bit questionable, but in his general care book he mentions always going to a vet first. I'm also fond of his style of writing, like in his book describing the various types of guinea pigs. It includes personal stories & describes the guinea pig as a pet that has really touched his life. I guess that's why his books have appealed to me so much more than other guinea pig books. Before the internet, he's basically all I had for reference on guinea pigs.

I have just started to read his site. I like his idea of spraying scented water on a aggressive pig. They become so involved in getting wet that they forget about the reason they got aggressive with their cage mate. I have never read that on here. Now that I think about it, Spraying water is recommended for any animal when they get too aggressive.

I just skimmed through his A to Z information. Much information was the same as here. There may be a few items including housing the piggies that we do not agree with. Otherwise I don't see what the fuss is about. Like everything else in this world you take the good advise and leave the rest. Since the opinion that hes an idiot was given, maybe more information can be given on him as to why? Like I said, I only read the A to Z info, I know nothing about him. But I didn't see anything there that would cause any uproar.

He gives dangerous advice that keeps owners from bringing their pigs to the vet when they are sick. Yes, there are a few things we can do ourselves for a pig when its sick, but they mainly have to do with treating some fur and skin problems.

yes, I love that about his books too. He goes off onto telling little tales of his piggies. Which makes it more fun to read his books, its not like your usual fact book.

I like his style of writing as well. When I read one of his books, I thought a lot of things were helpful, but some things I would not try on my own. I would trust your instinct. His advice on putting a guinea back in its cage (butt first) and how to pet them (like how their cage mates nuzzle them) and how to treat mites was good, but other stuff like clipping a chipped tooth with a nail clipper or feeding them bread dipped in dairy, no!

I'm a peanuts fan but I still don't understand what it means! :p

I retire my old boars to live in the main sow pen, usually when, say, his life-long partner dies. If there is no sexual interest shown after a few hours of being housed in there, it is safe to assume that he can live there permanently. So far I have had no ‘accidents’ in the five years that I have adopted this practice.

This is some of what he wrote under A-Z topic AGEING.

What a careless man in my opinion. I mean doesn't he know how easily an "accident" can happen and pretty soon he is trying to find homes for new piggies and they are given to a bad home or left on the streets where they produce more and more babies until their death *big breath*
all because one man figured no "accidents" would happen and he took a risk.

Now, maybe i am mistaken, but i always though that cavies could breed until they are very old and he never even stated what his feeling of old age is for pigs. For all we know, he could think old age for a pig is 4 or 5 years old.

People like that make me so mad!

I thought old age is 5 years. The expectancy of a piggy's life is 5 - 7. His experience for the last 5 years hold true so evidently its working for him.

A lot of Peter Gurney's advice is crap.

Like his old males living with females - like human males A BOAR IS FERTILE TILL THE DAY HE DIES. He is playing Russian Roulette with his pigs and one day it will backfire.

First and foremost he is a breeder and shower of guinea pigs. Take what you will from that fact.

He doesn't show guinea pigs and never has.

OK, then I retract that statement. But I know he still breeds them.
