"Pet" peeves

People who let their animals get obese, recognize they ARE obese and then do NOTHING to help them lose weight.

I developed this pet peeve when I rescued my pug. People kept telling me ALL the time that I need to feed her more. No I do not! She is perfectly healthy!
Slim/Trim. She's also learning weight pulling/swimming more often, so she's likely to develop some muscle tone this summer.

I have got to say that is the healthiest pug I have ever seen!

I've enjoyed this thread. My big "pet" peeve is animals dressed as people. It just creeps me out.

Another "pet" peeve I have is when people call their dogs their children. Again, it weirds me out.

People that casually abuse their animals because they are ignorant/uneducated/won't listen to others. Examples of this:

Using things such as Hartz medication on their pets.
Feeding their pets food that could kill them.
Consciously making the decision to buy a pet when they know they won't take them to a vet no matter how sick they get.
Parents that buy pets for their children and then blame the child if the pet gets hurt or sick (hurting an animal is not a life lesson for a child. Just educate them!)
People that scold their pets physically or by scaring them.
Leaving their pets alone for an extended period and "hoping they will be okay."

I knew someone that would regularly keep their dog (50lb) in a small crate for a few days at a time with no water or food.
Their other dog gets free roam 24/7 and is super tiny, barks at everything and everyone and has bitten a child before;
They let them get free roam because he's "cuter."

Uneducated is TOTALLY different from being ignorant. You can't look down on those who don't know any better. Some people have been using products that harm animals for years without incident(or atleast ones they haven't linked to the product). My childhood dog was fed Pedigree and IAMs her entire life. Are you going to look down on me because we didn't know any better?

I do not look down on others'; I can't be bothered.
I did not come into your home and say you are a bad person for your decisions.

This is a forum thread about pet peeves about pets and I posted just that.

Also I'll mention that giving your dog low-quality food isn't exactly comparable to Hartz medication.
Some people can't afford higher quality animal food, their animals would starve without it.
On the other hand, Hartz is not a necessary medication, there are natural ways to get rid of fleas,
people simply go for the cheap and easiest option.

A good example is giving your child McDonalds and comparing that to giving them alcohol or harmful drugs.

When I call someone ignorant, I am referring to someone who KNOWS what is right and healthier and they're refusing to do it for whatever reason.

Actually, some low quality foods are starting to get linked to tumors. Tumors can be very fatal. My childhood dog developed one on her chest that my mother refused to get removed because "It's too expensive" but she'll pay for surgery for my sister's dog's broken leg. Which BTW was about the same price. AND there are several brands of dog treats that are killings dogs and the brands refuse recall their products.

Also, eating foods, like McDonalds, everyday can cause severe medical issues that may lead to shorter lifespans and death.

Lastly, many people aren't aware of the natural methods to rid fleas. Some of those methods don't work on some dogs as well.

Ermm...am I missing something? My healthy 12yr old dog has been fed Iams since he could eat dry food, per vet recomendation. He has always had a sensitive stomach and anything else will upset it.

I quit buying anything made in China for my dog, many of the treats come from there and they just do not care. Boo loves only a few treats and the chicken jerky was his favorite and a recalled one. I now have to make my own, which won't be too bad because I do make homemade food sometimes for him. I know when he gets tired of a certain food, he will refuse to eat period. I am now feeding Dogswell 's Happy hips and he gets a half a can of cat food on it, twice a day. I haven't treated him for fleas yet this year as I have the oils to make a spray for him, i will just need to do it daily.

IAMs is one of the lower quality dog food brands. It has more plant protein than it should have animal protein. 1st ingredient is down right a no-no, Chicken By-Product Meal. YUCK! Who wants to eat a mush that consents of chicken feet, feathers, beaks, and the like? Further down the list(not very far from the 1st ingredient) corn, wheat, barely, dried beet pulp, dried egg, yeast, salt, sodium hexametaphosphate, fructooligosaccharides(da heck is that?!), choline chloride(that sounds like something that should be in your pool O.O).
Take a look at the ingredient list of kibbles. In the whole ingredient list of IAMs, there was only 3 proteins listed. 1 of which is oils, which states has tocopherols(soy) in it.

PetsMart's Simply Nourish is a great mid-high quality affordable food. Lamb and Oatmeal formula would be great for the sensitives.

All my dogs' treats are homemade. I purchase chicken/beef livers and boneless/skinless chicken breasts. I then dehydrate them. They absolutely love them. Cheap and healthy treats!

I haven't tried it yet, I read to slive the meat thin and bake at 200 for 4-6 hours. How do you do it?

Keep in mind that because a vet recommends it, doesn't mean it's the best quality. Vets (like all people and all people in all professions) have motivations that aren't always true. You might do some research on pet food brands for yourself instead of just accepting what a vet (or anyone else, for that matter) recommends.

Moving on ... A HUGE pet peeve of mine, if you can call it that, is when folks dump or "rehome" all their pets in preparation for a new (human) baby then a few years later turn around and get an animal for that child when the kid is probably far too young to be interacting with animals in the first place, especially fragile or small animals. Just seems like something destined to end badly for the pet - if the parent didn't care enough to keep the animal(s) and their commitment to the animal(s) when they were "blessed" with a baby, it doesn't bode well for them keeping or doing right by the animal obtained for that kid a few years down the road, either.

and people who thing its cool to get an exotic pet then when they get too big, they release them in the wild thinking they can fend for themselves...or worse thrive and multiply.

Exactly...McDonalds can lead to a lot of issues down the road as well. It can lead to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, malnutrition, etc.; But you know, some people can only afford that, or they do not have access to fresh, cheap healthy food (or the time to cook it.) It is a sad reality. However, giving a child harmful medications that aren't prescribed for them (such as prescription pain killer) or alcohol to relax them is not comparable to feeding low-quality food, since you can survive off of low-quality food.

Intentional harm or unintentional harm, the harm is still done. If someone gives something to their animal or their child and they don't research it first, that is pure ignorance. Giving a small dog chocolate and it dies, does it come back to life because you didn't know dogs can't have chocolate? Does the fact change that you did something ignorant and harmful? No.

Btw, someone that knows an animal shouldn't have something and has the option to change to a better option but refuses isn't ignorant; they are just an a**hole. lol
