How long can timothy hay go unused before it is no longer good?

It lasts pretty long as long as it is in a tightly closed space. Just don't let alot of air get to it.

you can tell if it is bad if it is clumped, smells, or you can see anything wrong

I don't know about hay that is bagged but I know that for horses hay will last for months as long as it doesn't get wet and actually, air/circulation is good. without circulation you risk it getting moldy and I know in horses that's a deadly combination, I imagine moldy hay isn't really good for any animal to ingest. so as long as it still smells like hay and you don't get it wet it should last you a while.

hay should be stored where air can get to it. plastic is a huge no-no for storing hay. so just leaving hay in a cardboard box is fine.

for the shelf life, you can tell by the color of the hay. the greener, the healthier.

Oh, sorry then! I was at a total misunderstanding! I'll immediately find a better place for my hay! Thanks for the info, I woudn't want the hay to get moldy!

Yeah, you don't want to store hay in a tightly closed rubbermaid container or anything because it will get moldy. I use either a cardboard box or a rubbermaid container with no lid on it to store hay.

I use a large cardboard box. In my photo galleries, my bale of hay is stored in a cardboard box and has lasted me for months now- I'm still not done with half of it. It is as fresh as the day I got it. I think it might last me through the winter, but since it gets cold here I use a lot of hay.

Would it last in the plasric bag it came in? The bag has holes in it.

Plastic bags aren't good for hay either. It's still not venilated, even with holes. Just put it in a small cardboard box- packed together, but still venilated.

Is that how you spell venilated? Lol, not too sure.... >.<;

I think it's ventilated. But then again, I spelt plastic plasric. :3

I just keep my hay on a big shelf. ive had it for oh, 1.5 months now and it is still as green as ever!

Really? Alright, thanks! And sorry Setsuna! I didn't mean to give you false info!
