Is this a sutible alternative to carefresh in the litter tray? The pearls worry me.

What is the alternative?

Oopps! I forgot to post the link here it is.

I am sorry not realy sure. I would just stick to what you are doing now.

Have no idea what bentonite is, but if you could research more on that then I would think it's ok. It does say that it is non toxic. Why don't you try kiln dried pine or aspen? Both are really cheap.

you see I wanted somthing than would absorb odor realy well that I could use in a litter box. If you have any suggestions tell me where I might find it and what it is.

Bentonite is made from clay minerals. I have never tried this product. I know that bentonite is mainly used in drilling. I have found one report of a cat who may have developed toxicosis from ingesting a bentonite based cat litter litter. This is the link.

I wouldn't use it.

any other suggestions?

I agree with Ly, I wouldn't use it either.

Critter care is Walmart's generic of carefresh. That's what I use. I don't trust that other stuff because I'm afraid it may cause a choking hazard to the pigs. You can use newspaper and hay as well.

Wood pellets are also really good -they are super absorbant

I use Crittercare in my girls' litterbox. I just take out the wet spots once in the morning and in the evening and refill. There's no bad smell (except for a wet-newspaper kind of smell). About once a week, I empty the whole thing out and give the litterbox a scrubbing. Easy! (And relatively cheap! Costs about $4 every other week for two pigs.)

I worry about the bentonite because my pigs will sometimes munch on small bits of litter. When I googled bentonite, one site said it "swelled considerably" when exposed to water. What would that do inside a piggie's tummy?

I use this in my litter boxes and I like it. I do put a thin layer of finely shredded aspen under it. I found this way I use less and it comes out easier. It usually dumps out in one solid clump where they have went the most.

smoot, It does not swell considerably. It eventually all gets soft and sticks together in one clump like, well, clay. It gets like that from absorbing the urine over time. I have actually checked mine after one wee and it is still the same except it turns darker. Usually one corner of my litter boxes is very heavy from the absorption. It does get very 'thick'.

I have even from time to time if I am running low, scraped out the corner that is most used and continued to use the rest of it as it is generally not even wet.

Just yesterday I could really smell them and it has been less than a week with the cage cleaning. I changed the litter boxes and it was like a new cage again so it will smell after about 4 days but then so would anything else used it the pee in that spot constantly.

does your piggie nibble it though?

I have yet to see them nibble at it. However, IF I did see them eating it, I would not use it. I even have three 8 week old babies that are getting good at using the litter boxes and I don't see them eating it either.

Personally, I like it but there are others here with more experience than me who wouldn't use it. You could try it and if you see them eating it then definately don't use it anymore. It's like anything else though. Some may like it and others may hate it. Look at the different opinions on fleece.

I already use fleece but I just wanted Ideas for a litter box.
