I just barely looke at that web page that someone gave me. That was awful, seeing all thoughs cages packed with pigs made me sick. I always thought that usually the breeder doesn't care whether or not they interbreed with each other. It never dawned on me that they kept them packed like that in little cat carriers, in such filth and never having a changed cage. I mean thoughs cages were covered in yrs of old bedding. That was horrible

Maybe now you realize why we don't buy from pet stores- we don't want that to continue.

I know. But it's still not like all pet stores are like that. I know for sure i would never go to petsmart or petco. Maybe a place like i got my first one. The lady that sold the store the pigs was a breeder who puts her pigs in the pig shows. His ear is even tagged.

But i still next time for sure will only go through a shelter.

You can also go to feed stores and online stores for supplies, hay, and pellets, too.

That's not a good thing. Sometimes the small mom and pop ones are just as bad if not worse. Show breeders are not that great sometimes either. Look in the kitchen forum. They breed only for looks, culling any pigs that don't look perfect, and then dumping them, flooding the pet market, when shelters and rescues are overflowing.

Yeah that makes sense. Cause mine is a long haired pig, but he doesn't have the rooster tail on his back and his head that the showers look for. But i'm definnately glad she gave it to my pet store.

What was the website that they gave you? I bought my pigs at Petco (before I knew about this site), and they have taken a long time to "socialize". I'd be curious to see what kind of conditions they came from

I am so happy that you took the time to look at that link.

Unfortunatly Petco and Patsmart may very well get their animals from places like that. A broker comes in and gets the animals from the mill breeder then sells them to the stores. Most of these pet store chains have no clue where their animals come from...except by name.

Many rescues have purebred and beautiful pigs for adoption. The two girls in my avatar are both rescues. Their markings are crisp and clean and my peruvian has long gorgeous hair (in between shaving her)...if I believed in showing I bet both would do well...but showing is another evil to discuss another time...
