I just got my guinea pig the other day, but Im a little worried because she isnt drinking! do guinea pigs get dehydrated? or can they go without water for a long time. As soon as I got her she peed and pooped. But she has only peed once. Is this a problem?

I would be conserned. Do you have a water bottle or bowl? How old is the pig? How many days have you had her and how many days since she last urinated? Do you feed her vegtables? What kinds? Did you try spraying her lettuce with water? Also, are you positive she has not drank some and the water level in the bottle just seems the same? Did you take her to the vet for a new pet check-up? I would take her just to be on the safe side. Yes, cavies naturally drink allot of water, and CAN get dehydrated.

Until your certain I would put alot of water on her veggies. Also tap the end of the tube and make sure a good drip of water comes out. Is she old enough to figure out the location of the bottle and how to drink from it? Younger pigs learn alot from older pigs in the cage and really don't do well on their own. It may just be she hasn't found it yet or it's different from her old one. She could also be too scared to come out and drink. Usually guinea pigs drink quite a bit of water and for adults I would guess around at least 2oz a day since most of mine drink about 4 oz or more a day.

She is about 3 months old. Ive showed her were her water is. And I have not given her any vegetables yet. I thought that they were only supposed to have them 2-3 times a week.

Vegetables must be given daily. Lettuces like endive, romaine, radicchio, etc. are all good every day foods, but not iceberg lettuce. Cherry tomatoes, chard, 1 baby carrot, parsley, cilantro and peppers can also be given daily. When your baby pig reaches the age of 6 months, parsley should only be given every 2-4 days.

Cabbage, celery (chopped up into small pieces) and celery leaves, various fruits, and cucumber can be given every 2-4 days.

What hay and dry food are you feeding your little piggy?

As for the water issue: some pigs don't drink very much water at all. My pigs drink very little - maybe 20ml a day, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. If you don't see your pig drink at all during the next few days, I would offer watery veggies (including cucumber) maybe once every 2 days. Have you tried a water bowl, instead of bottle?
