I just got Ginger yesterday, but I haven't seen her drink out of her water bottle yet. I saw her start to, but it looked like nothing came out as she turned away 2 seconds later. I was pretty sure water was coming out though because it was leaking a little bit earlier. I tried filling up her food dish-which I emptied out and put the pellets on a paper plate-with water but she still didn't drink out of it. What do I do? I gave her lots of lettuce that had just been washed (by me) so maybe was she just not thirsty because she got so much water from the lettuce? :?:

Please help guys I'm worried :(

Thank you for understanding haha sorry...

I feed her lots of lettuce so she must be getting most of her water from there too. Thanks, good to know that nothing is wrong! :)

My little ones were not drinking much either and I checked the water bottle the ball inside was hard to move and hardly anything came out. During floor time I set out a small water dish and they did drink that way. I also gave them watermelon to get some water into them. I went and bought a new water bottle (and this time checked the ball to make sure it easily moves) Now they have no problem drinking. I'd check the ball, make sure it isn't tight and that when you lightly tough it your finger gets pretty wet.

spy9doc is right, some piggies just don't really drink that much, while others drink a lot more. It just depends on the piggie. Ginger is also just scared right now, and needs time to adjust to her new home, that's all ! Just give her some time...o.k. ? :) I am sure she is fine honey. Have you read anything from Cavy Spirit ? Here is a link on their social life and behaviour below for you to read.

Ok thanks :)

I have read practically everything I can on there and I really want to get Ginger a friend but once again I will have to convince Dad. Most likely I will have to wait as I just got Ginger. But I will ASAP.

That is WONDERFUL that you have been reading up on their care and all ! :) I hope you didn't think I was cheekily suggesting that you get her a friend ? For that was NOT my intention at all. Even though that is important for her to have a buddy, I was not giving you that link to "point that out" but to just help you feel more at ease on typical piggie behaviour when they are in a new place, and what you can expect.

Oh I didn't think that :) ...Ok maybe i did haha  But thanks for the link lol

Here is an excerpt from the link I should have given you to begin with, below:

"On first arriving home, your pet will appreciate being left alone for a day to adjust to the new environment. Although new cavies may not like to be picked up at first and will race around the cage to avoid it, a little bribery with some enticing veggies and some patience will help get them used to your company. They are easily startled so use a quiet voice and slow movements to help keep them calm and a towel while holding them to avoid accidents. When lifting and carrying your cavy, be sure to support the entire body with two hands. Cavies are easily injured if dropped, and may nip or bite if not properly handled."

Have you read much on guinea lynx ? Here is the link that excerpt up above came from. Guinea lynx is a wonderful site that many of us turn to for medical expertise.

"Guinea Pigs Social life" was a stupid choice at this time, and didn't really relate to your question at all, I am sorry about that ! Stupid me !

Good luck on convincing your Dad. May I suggest that you convince him by showing him these sites,( or printing them out for him to read) ? Ask him if he will sit down with you and talk about it. Try to discuss this with him in a calm, mature manner, and address your practical points. Like, how having two cavies does NOT cost that much more than having one. In giving them a friend, it also keeps them healthier which also means fewer Vet bills in the long run. Also most importantly, LISTEN to "his" view points, and give them thoughtful consideration as well. I also highly suggest that you "ADOPT not SHOP" for her friend....there are so many piggies desperate for new, good loving forever homes.:)

Thanks for the link I have read as much as I could from every "cavy care" website i could :p Also, thanks for the good luck-lol-I might hold off for about a week being I just got Ginger, but I will do what you said, thanks. It's kinda like what I did when I wanted a pig in a first place. I sat down w/ my dad and asked why I couldn't have a guinea pig and he gave me 3 points. I made a slideshow/presentation on the computer and showed him to prove him wrong and he eventually said yes. :) I will repeat these steps a.s.a.p. Do you think I should start now? (Even though I JUST got Ginger) or wait. If so how long should I wait to bring it up? I'm already putting together a little presentation as we speak just so that I'm prepared.

Also, don't worry, I am DEFINITELY not shopping. That's why I spent so long looking on Craigslist for a piggie. ( Unfortunately, they never have any pigs at my local humane society! ): )

WOW. Seriously. I am very impressed with how you handled things, very cool, very mature, and also very smart !! Sometimes even people my age don't show such a mature attitude, believe me !

I think you should trust your own judgement, for when the right timing is, for you know your Dad best. Continue to do what you are doing in preparing yourself, and your practical, yet informative presentation. Sleep on it. Pray about it ( If you pray, if not- I totally respect that). You will know when the timing is right, trust your instincts...but NOT ever...your emotions. Emotions are unreliable and get us nowhere fassst. GOOD LUCK !!
