Well, I don't have any piggies, but was hoping to get two from a lady I found on the rescue site. I had really gotten my hopes up because I just can't seem to find any in my area. I was going to have to drive 3 hours to pick them up and that was the closest I could find. But now she says one of them has to have dental surgery and she doesn't want to send them to a new home now. They were her personal pets and she was having to move and didn't want to fly them because she didn't want to stress them out more than she had to. Now I'm definitely piggie-less. I could get them from a local petsmart, but I REALLY don't want to do that. If that's all i can find, do any of you think it would be just terribly wrong of me to do so? I've spent the last month on the internet looking at every cavy site and rescue site I could find and just don't have any luck. Any suggestions?

Did you try www.petfinder.com? Classifieds?

Where are you located? What big cities are closest? Maybe we can help so you can avoid going to the pet store.

I'm located in a little town like 30 miles south of Houston, Texas. My town is Needville. I'm so upset at not getting those piggies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried this place?

They sometimes have piggies. Houston SPCA had some last month. Maybe they have some now.

Contact information for CAP is:
Citizens for Animal Protection

Houston, TX 77070
Phone: 281-497-0591

Was it the Texas Rustlers piggie rescue that you had contacted?

There are some piggies needing re homing in Denton and Tomball. Are those near you?

Have you checked your local newspaper classifieds? Or www.craigslist.org pet section? Sometimes they have some. Or you can try www.guinealynx.com placement forum.

no, Denton is really far away, but I'm about to go to those other sites you listed to see what I can find. I may have already looked, but I've been to soo many sites they're all a blur now!! :) I will keep looking though.

If you do have to buy one from a store, make sure to sex your pig yourself, because at my petsmart, I was sold a girl but got a boy. No problem with that, I love Cocoa to death, but if you had another sex guinea pig, that could lead to problems! And no, it isn't horrible to buy one, I have to get mine from a family owner pet supply store because my mother or father don't want to drive me to a shelter two hours away "just for guinea pigs" in their words. And I like to look at it this way, though it may seem like I'm in denial, but there's one more piggy that won't end up in a rescue at all.

There's (broken link removed)... not always a very wide selection BUT a cavy classifieds in any case...:)

Have you checked Craigslist.com? My boyfriend and I will be adopting a new piggie on Saturday from a woman who needs to find a new home for her pig.

- this is my problem exactly! the closest rescure or shelter at all in my area is 2 hours away and my parents won't drive. i bought one from a small pet store and I sexed Harry before i got her, to make sure she was a girl.

Yes, I agree. People keep urging me to adopt, adopt, adopt, and as much as I'd love to, it's just not an option. My parents don't see why we would drive an hour away for a pig when we could go to another pet store that we KNOW they know what they're doing. For me, since I can't drive yet, it just ISN'T an option. And trust me, I've looked, so don't say I didn't look hard enough or was lazy. I checked cavycapers, craigslist, petfinder, cavyrescues, yellow pages, I asked around, I tried every source I could find.

I have been searching from I think about 4 pm today. I only stopped long enough to eat. I haven't really found anything!! I may just have to go to Petsmart. I'm willing to drive and everything, I just can't find any around!! I've e-mailed a breeder who lives in Spring Texas which is like 2 or 3 hours away. She only has smooth short haired cavies. I really wanted at least one with rosettes (cow licks). She's going to e-mail a breeder friend of hers in College Station who has long-haired cavies. Hopefully that pans out for me. I have family there who could pick them up for me and bring them here when they come for Christmas. I'd really like to see them in person first. O but that's a drive!! I probably will end up making the drive though. Thank ya'll for helping me so much!!! I love this site and can't wait til I have piggies of my own to share with ya'll

Can't you drive to Houston then? It says there are three guinea pigs at the Houston SPCA.

Whats the point of getting them from a breeder. You might as well get them from a petstore since bredders are just as bad. A guinea pigs is available to you (the short haired one).

If it isnt what she wants its not what she wants. You dont want to be like oh ok guine pig lets get it, it should me more than that and if she doesnt want one like that then one to her liking isnt available and thats just as bad!

I think she meant the breeder near her only had short haired ones, so she is going to drive 2 to 3 hours to look at another breeder's guinea pigs.

Have you tried the Houston SPCA? They have 3 guinea pigs there. You can visit them and see if you like them. Otherwise, try CAP in Houston, or City of Pearland Animal Control and Adoption Center. I also pm'd you the contact info of someone in the area who volunteers with shelters in the area. She knows what piggies are where. She can help you.

My point was that she should not go to a breeder

And agreed again. Shelters generally have piggies that really need homes.

Look here https://www.petfinder.com that was the closetest thing I think. If you go to petfinder and type in your zip code you could get guinea pigs in lists of what is closest.

yeah, i would suggest whatever you can do to adopt, because it really is worth it, but you might look into the Petsmart, because i know that at least my local petsmart works with local shelters, so every single animal they have is an adoption, not a sale, and they also help the shelters because the sheters used to have to euthanize the animals for lack of room, but the local petsmarts and a couple of others here do things like providing homes temporarily if a shelter is over-run, and stuff like that, so fo you have pet stroes like that, that do absolutley no animal sales, whatsoever, go for it.
