Next year I'm planting a garden

I didn't realize how quickly my piggy would go through veggies. I've decided after my 3 trips to the grocery store this week, that I'm planting a garden next spring lol

I gave up a whole section of my garden to plant veggies for my Boys. It has been tons of fun to go out and select their breakfast, snack, and supper. The only problem I ran into was I didn't buy enough seeds for a second crop of lettuce, etc. It was hard to find seeds this time of summer, and ended up paying $20 for 7 small packages. So something to keep in mind for next year.

There's another bonus for growing your own veggies. You can enjoy watching them feed in the garden by themselves (supervised, of course). I did that with Scooby and Shaggy yesterday, but the little buggers headed right to the corn. They then proceeded to play hide and seek with me in the corn. It took two of us to corner and catch them!

I'm hoping to be able to section off part of the yard for veggies and clean grass. Jasper (our dog) does whatever he wants in the backyard, and I'd like a little park for pigger playing!lol

Easy way to safely grow grass even if you aren't good at plants. Take some grids and make half of a 2x4 then set it on the open end. Hang two 24" plant bulbs from the top. They sell all sorts of lighting fixtures in garden centers so it's not hard to get one with 2 bulbs for less than $20. Fill a rubbermaid container with 3" of rocks and fill to within 4" of the top with potting soil. Soak with water. Throw on bluegrass seed and hook your lights into a timer set for 8-12hrs a day. The rocks keep you from overwatering but store water incase you forget to water. The lights work automatically and it only takes up 28" high, 28" long, and 14" wide. It's not subject to natural weather occurances such as winter, lack of sunlight, or poor soil. It's nearly fool proof. Even my stepmom who's plants seemed to die as they came through her doorway can grow plants this way.


The best garden fertilizer is composted guinea pig droppings, wood shavings, and a little green material like inedible veggie parts or grass clippings. Just pick a spot and start making a pile. Spread it on in the fall after harvesting the garden.

I had a parsley plant once, and guess what? It didn't last more than 2 days.
When I move, I'm sectioning off a corner of the new garden so that my dogs can't get there and do their 'business' - that way my pigs get to have some lovely fresh grass each day! Maybe growing veggies would be a cheaper way to keep the guins happy!

It's much cheaper to grow your own veggies, that is why I have a garden solely for my pigs. I have an endless supply of cucumbers, peppers, parsley, kale, watermelon, tomatoes, squash, and cantaloupe. The pigs couldn't be happier!

We have a garden too...how much is too much? I just found out on another thread that I shouldn't be overdoing the carrots, so is there such a thing as too much cucumber, melons, peppers or tomatoes?

I used to love keeping a garden for Tony...but the only thing that I could get to keep growing was carrots...heehee. They must be really easy, or really hardy, because everything else just never grew (though I suspect it was due to the bunnies that live in the little forest behind the house...at least somebody enjoyed them!). When Tony died, I dedicated the garden to him, and that's where his resting place is. I haven't started a new garden since, but have thought about putting a new one more near the house, rather than closer to the trees, where all the little garden-raiders live!
I like the idea of the indoor garden! Just might look into that : )
