Hi everyone,

I just joined your site. I was given a baby cavy. I am so excited. Me and my husband had two cavys a couple of yrs ago and we had to adopt them out. My husband lost his job. But anyways I have this new little girl that I think is about 3 months or so old. The owner that my husband got her from he didnt think to ask how old she is. I know she is a baby and she is small.
But I need some refresher course on them. At least on the social part. I have a 3ft cage for her.

My question is how long does it take them to start to get comfortable around us? Should I just let her be for a week and not hold her or anything?
My other question is we have held Daisy a couple of times and she likes to climb up our arm and hang out on my neck under my hair? Does anyone else cavy do that?

Hello SweetDaisy. Welcome to the site. One of my boys likes to hide in my hair and another likes to lay under my chin. One of my other boys will try to chew my hair though so I have to watch out for him :). Good luck with your new little girl.

Some pigs do like to climb in your hair.

If you have a digital camera please post a picture!

I have a 3ft cage for her.
Is that 3 ft. wide, 3 ft. long or 3 ft. total usable inside space?

Sorry its 3 ft long and 3ft wide

I'd let her be for a few days and then after she gets settled in start introducing your selfs to her by sitting at her cage and talking to her, hand feeding her veggies, and some lap time about a half hour at first and then changing it to an hour after a little while. And of course plenty of floor time in a safe supervised area. Also most importantly a same sex friend will make her much happier. But there are some rules most importantly make sure when you do get her a buddy that they are quarinted for atlest 2 weeks to rule out any sickness.

Edit: Oh and welcome the Cavy Cage family!

Sweetdaisy,My guinea pig Paulie, also likes to sit up on my neck under my hair of if there a blanket on the back on the chair/couch.

Hi there! Welcome to the forums :) Your cage size sounds good and yes it's normal for your pig to sit there!

Good size cage for a little pigger! Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the site and enjoy your new piggy! :)

My piggie Daphne likes to run up and sit on my shoulder too...always leaves me with scratch marks on my chest!
