Just wanted to say hello and that this website and cavyspirit are great resources of information :). My wife and I are planning to adopt a pair of cavies. We really love Clark and Bert from the Adoptables section of cavyspirit. We just sent in the application form to Teresa and look forward to finding out more about these awesome guys.
Right now we're planning on building a 2x4 C&C cage and putting it in our family room. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, especially on where to buy supplies here in the bay area. It looks like An-Jan Feed & Pet Supply is a preferred shop.

Its great that you are adopting 2 piggers from cavyspirits. I know that my piggers likes cozies, cuddle cups, hammocks and pigloos. Im not from where you are but there are plenty of cavy lovers near you. Good luck on your 2 children addictions. I will be opening an online store called Isaac's Haven and its all hand made pet needs from dog beds to pet carriers. I will have cozies and ect for the piggies as well. I should have the site up and running by the end of the year and hopefuly sooner like summer. I might make a list of everyones name and e-mail addresses so that all of you cavy lovers can be the first to browse through.

Welcome Sushinut. I am not from your area so I can't help much with the were to go thing. But have you concidered using fleece? Instead of regular bedding. I had mine on a regular pine bedding ( non chemical washed). I switched them over to the fleece about 3 days ago and my piggys LOVE it. I see them out more often. The only bad part is my cats can also see them much better now..lol.
Paper lunch bags and paper towel tubes are a huge hit with my piggies. And I always have some around the house.
Good luck with your new additon to the family.

Welcome to the forums! You will find so much useful information here. I commend you on adopting as so many piggies need homes. Did you look at the list of non-animal pet shops on Cavy Spirit? There are quite a few in the bay area. I hope you will be able to find them tons of nice things.

Also make sure to get hay, plain pellets (www.oxbowhay.com has wonderful pellets without harmful chemicals and preservatives) and lots of veggies. I think no matter what piggies you adopt, they will love you for providing them a wonderful home.

Thanks for the info! :) I'm trying to find out more basic information and can't seem to find too much on bedding, specifically the best 'value' bedding. I can afford to do 100% Carefresh, but it doesn't seem to be cost effective for a 2x4 C&C cage. I've read that fresh hay is good too.

(broken link removed)

Are there other links with basic howtos for cost effective bedding? Maybe my super google skills are lacking today :).

Hay is not a good bedding method. It doesn't absorb well and has to be changed out at least once or twice a day. Aspen seems preferred by some and aspen from what I hear is cheaper than carefresh. Some use carefresh with a layer of aspen over the top. Kiln dried pine is good but make sure it's kiln dried. Cedar is an absolute NO as it can cause respiratory problems in cavies.

Fleece is also a good choice. Once you buy several changes, you don't have the cost of bedding every month, you just have the cost of washing which is so much cheaper.
