Hi I am also a new owner for about a month. Bought her for my niece. Then when I got her home I found out I got a bargain. Waiting to see how many I got for the price of one! My brother said she couldn't have it so I now have her. (Now don't everyone write and say I should have ask first.) We has talked about her having one since she had no luck with a hamster. Thats why I picked her, was because a mother made her son return it to the pet store, and she loved to be held. The lady at the store told me I could have her if I bought the starter cage kit. That should have made the Light bulb go off. So my brother said she could have one or two of the babies. Which has been great. And now I am getting attact to her. But I need help in understanding her. At first she like to be held. Now when I try to pick her up she trys to get away. I have her cage on the floor, but when I talk to her or feed her, I always get on the floor at her level. I can keep her cage open and she never trys to get out. When I do take her out, she goes right back to her cage. I have to take her cage sides off, and then she will get on the floor but once I have finish clean her cage and put the sides back up she runs right back into it. I understand about her now needing another one in her cage, but I thought I would wait til she has her babies. I know this is long, but if anypne could help me. I have downloaded so much info. But it's just not the same as talking to other cavy owners. If I did this wrong please be forgiving. I'm going to say my husband is overseas, I am here all by byself. And just don't have anyone to share with this sweetie. Oh by the way my niece name her (Sweetie) and I ask her why that name and she said so she can call hers (sweetie pie) after The mom.

Thanks ya'll,
Aunt Elmo

My first thought was that it's probably un comfortable for her to be picked up, so that's probably why she's hesitant now...and as far as wanting to run and hide, that's all normal behavior. Be sure that you have the proper bar spacing for you new little ones too. They can get out very easily...as one of our other members sadly found out, and she even took the precautions...

Good luck and please keep us posted! I don't know about babies, so I don't have much more info tp give you! Sorry!

Thanks for the tips. I'm sure she is uncomfortable. I know it will just take time.

When my husband and I decided to get another piggie for Princess Fluffy. We got her at a local pet store and he gave us a bargan by buying 2 for twenty dollars instead of fifteen dollars for one. When we brought them home we found out that they werent both females they were brothers and sisters and she was due anytime then. We tried to hold her and she would always run and hide from us. Now since she already had 3 of her pups a month ago she kinda lets us hold her. Just be patient and they will come around.
