I just took in a new piggy yesterday from someone getting ready to dump her due to allergies. She is a 2 month old who has never had fruit or veggies. My previous piggys always had veggies from the start. I know the importance of vitamin c in her diet but she wont touch them. Should I just give it time? Any suggestions on the most tempting veggies? I have a little sliver of orange a half a baby carrot and a sliver of cucumber in there already.

When I got Lily almost 2 weeks ago, she would not eat veggies either. I started to shred her veggies. Here is what I did:

  • Day 1- Shredded veggies with romanie lettuce - she ate everything except the bit of grape (given rarely, I had them on hand..there was 1/4 a small grape)
  • Day 2 - Shredded veggies with romaine lettuce, a few bigger unshredded hunks of carrot and pepper - she ate everything!
  • Day 3 -Shredded veggies with romaine lettuce, bigger slices of all veggies and a blueberry cut in half...she ate some unshredded carrots during floor time
  • Day 4 - Shredded veggies but mainly bigger slices of everything
  • Day 5 - regular veggies sliced like everyone else eats
She is now eating her veggies just like the rest of the girls. She was in isolation during this time I was shredding her stuff so she didn't learn to eat by watching the others. If anything, Petunia learned by watching Lily that those green peppers are quite tasty.

I just used a cheese grater to shred her veggies or you can try chopping them finely. I also peeled the peppers at first, now I just toss them in like I always do.

Cujo didn't seem too interested at first either - just introduce them slowly and be aptient and your baby will come around. I'm sure of it.

Good news... I left for an hour and the veggies dissapeared!! Shes now popping around like a nut as happy as can be. Thank you for your ideas.

Great, I'm glad to hear it!

yay!!!!!! glad for you and the pig!

When I first got my current piggy Charley she was a youngun very sick with scurvy, from birth. She was hospitalized for four days on IVs and when she came home the vet gave us a concoction he called "Slurry". It was a green powder, probably just alfalfa/timothy stuff, i dont know. Anyway we mixed the powder with water into a paste and she sqeaked like crazy and ate vigourously and got paste all over her about three times a day. She gained 2 lbs and has been healthy every since.

She is now four years old and very healthy and has never eaten any veggie i have given her. She will only eat timothy and timothy pellets. But i keep her on OX Bow pellets and she gets fine nutrition.

I figure if the pig doesnt like it, well, then it doesnt like it, as long as it is healthy and gets enough nutrients its fine. if you are really not sure, ask the vet!

really? wow! I didnt know piggers could live without fresh food

thats what i thought. all my other pigs LOVED fresh fruits and veggies, but this one just wont eat them. i think that the quality of the pellets is what makes it work, because Ox Bow is a very good quality food.
