Hi,

Welcome to the site. When you do get her a new friend, make sure to adopt and don't buy from petstores or breeders. There are so many guinea pigs in shelters and rescues. Before you get another one, make sure the cage is at least 7.5 sq.ft. Bigger is better. You should take your current pig to a cavy savvy vet to make sure she's healthy and that she is a she. Petstore pigs are usually sick and missexed.

As for the first day, it is normal for them to hide. They take some time to warm up to you. What kind of pellets did you get? Plain pellets with no seeds are the no seeds and mix are the best to feed them. We recommend Oxbow and Kleenmama brand. Kleenmama is only available on the Internet. Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home

If your piggie is less than 6 months old, you can feed her unlimited Alfalfa pellets. Older pigs should get timothy pellets, 1/8 - 1/4 cups per day. (2 - 4 tablespoons.)

They also need unlimited grass hay at all times. (timothy, orchard, bluegrass, etc)

Orange is not a good fruit to start with. Fruits should be given in small amount only once or twice a week. You should start with lettuces (any type except iceberg), bell peppers and cilantro.

Oops, I meant to say "Plain pellets with no seeds and mix are the best to feed them."

Welcome to the forum! Lissie gave you some great info. I just want to also encourage you to adopt next time. Please do not buy from the petstore! Their pigs are typically ill and missexed. They come from breeding mills and are kept in horrible conditions. There are sooo many pigs facing euthenasia in shelters! You can also check your local Craigs List for people rehoming the pigs that they've "outgrown".

It's a good bet that any food, cages, treats, vitamin C drops, etc that the petstore sold you are junk and can be tossed. I would also disregard any information they gave you as to how to care for your pig.

You came to the right place for accurate info! Start reading the "sticky" sections and you'll learn a lot! Before getting another pig, start by sexing your pig yourself to make sure it's a girl!!

Have you looked into building a C&C cage? It's so much cheaper than buying a cage and your pig will be much happier in one! It sounds like your current cage is 3.5 sq ft and the minimum for one pig is 7.5 sq ft. So you definately need to expand! Also, if you are going to get a second pig you'll probably want to go up to 10.5 sq ft.

As to your question, I'm sure she's just scared from the transition which is very normal. Just give her some time to acclimate.

Thnx for all the great input. Ive Made my own cage, Very big.. I use the pastic board stuff That ive read in the Forums and Using the a kit I found at canadian Tire I was able to make her a nice big spot for her to hang out and play in. I also got her alittle Iglo to hide in aswell. She loves it. As for the Food Im giving her Looks an All in one Pellet diet. I dont read anything about seeds anywhere on the bag. So I guess thats good? I got her these Dryed apple treats for her but she wont seem to touch them, I put one infront of her and she had a snif and left it alone? I put it in her food bowl and its still there >.< advice on the veggies? She loves carrots tho that I know hehe "munch munch munch"

Living world pellets are cheap and low quality. You need a high quality pellet such as oxbow or Kleenmama's.

No multi-vitamins/mineral supplements. They don't need them and it changes the taste of the water making pigs drink less plus they degrade too quickly to be of any use. Vitamins and minerals are acquired through fresh veggies. You need to start with lettuces (no iceburg), bell pepper and cilantro. The carrots can wait until she eats a good varied veggie diet.

No dried apple treats. They are like concentrated sugar.

Pet stores try to sell you things that are bad for them. The multivitamins and dried apples and the pellets you bought are pretty much garbage. Please read the stickies in the diet forum.

Please adopt her a buddy Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder Don't buy.
