I have taken in this little boar today. The Breeder (Shows) said that his mother chewed off his ears when very young. I could not leave him there knowing that he would not be properly taken care of. They were hesitant to get rid of him, but they caved to me giving him hugs and kisses immediately. He was kept on Aspen, but not of Carefresh until his quarantine is over. He has a little bit of crusty eyes that I have wiped and treated. there is also a good size bite behind his left ear that I have also treated. Is there anything else that I should do to help him adjust? Thank you All :) WP 001927 WP 001919 WP 001926

Poor piggy! Thanks so much for taking him in. What's his name?

Skinny pigs need someplace warm available to them at all times. You'll need plenty of cuddle cups that they can snuggle in (you'll have to wash them frequently because they'll be peed and pooped in). You'll have to keep his nails trimmed and maybe buffed to keep him from scratching himself, and watch him to make sure his skin doesn't dry out. If you house him with other pigs, you'll also have to keep their nails trimmed and buffed. Some skinny owners have to oil their pigs with cold pressed virgin coconut oil, others don't seem to need that.

They also eat (and poop!) more than haired pigs, probably in an effort to keep warm.

Watch the bite carefully -- they can abscess pretty quickly. If you see any signs of redness, swelling or pus, get him to a vet for antibiotics and possible lancing.

Awwww! He is so cute, even with out his ears! I would try to make him as comfortable as you can.Do you by any chance have other pigs? If so,I would separate him from the others until he has adjusted, because he may have been picked on by the others on the farm and be nervous of your other pigs. :) Good Luck!

It distresses me to think that this may be happening with other pigs the breeder has. Pigs usually don't chew on babies ears unless there is some serious overcrowding.

Thank you all for your Help and Kind Words! I have not been able to reply due to my busy work schedule. Skippy Q, yes he is super soft and warm! I have named him Domino! NormaS and MariKay, I actually have a Himi Skinny Pig female named Hippo! Ha ha, I will not be breeding them whatsoever. Hippo and her sister Pigbran (he he) we also taken from bad situations. bpatters, I have a cuddle pillow and a tunnel with him that I have made. I have actually owned hairless rats before a long time ago and remember what a pain it was to have them housed together. He is quarantined unfortunately by himself to be sure he isn't ill (RI) to be on the safe side. He squeaked for food at me yesterday which I was super excited about. He isn't used to being handled so he is away from all the others (safe side) and in a quiet place (away from the dogs). Thank you for the info on the coconut oil as well! I'll be sure to pick that up at the health food store in town. His bite has greatly improved with the ointment I have applied everyday. I do fear that the owner has others that are not being watched when having litters and its really sad to think of. He has beautiful pigs, but they all need TLC.

Years ago I did a pick up of guinea pigs at our local animal control to transfer to someone from our rescue. They loaded up the guinea pigs into boxes for me and I made the drive to our usual meeting place. As we went to transfer them, we found that the people from animal control had placed a mom and baby with another female in a box together and the second female bit off the baby's ears. The little one was quickly adopted and lived a normal life. I know of another person who had a guinea pig that had it ears chewed off and suffered no long term problems from it.

This is very sad situation but Im glad you have taken him home. I dont know why this happened to him other than neglect on the breeders part of course... but you may wonder too some animals eat their own babies and we dont always know why.

Pinky, I am glad to hear that the piggies you took in went to great homes. It is possible that another sow did chew them off, its hard to say what really went on since it doesn't seem as if the breeder really watched them close enough. Thanks Y'all
