New owner a few questions

Hi we just bought our first Guinnea pig a few weeks back
She has gone off her pelleted food we also feed her carrots, pear, lettuce, apple one slice of any of these a day she is only 10 weeks old what else can we feed her can she have any type of nuts or seeds.
We discovered a scab on her ear yesterday and we rubbed it with warm olive oil and it came off (healed underneath) does this sound like a mite if not what could cause it?
Thanks in Advance:D

Re: New owner a few questions

Sounds like she has mites. Please treat her as soon as possible - mites are very painful for pigs. You'll need 3 shots of ivermectin each a week apart. Treat ASAP! Also you'll want to keep in mind that guinea pigs are very social creatures and do better in pairs. Also if she isn't eating have a vet check her teeth.

Re: New owner a few questions

My piggie is acting strange. He doesn't want to walk around too much and it seems like he may be having problems chewing or swallowing. I checked his teeth and they aren't too long. I don't know what wrong with him. Do you think maybe he's hurt?

Re: New owner a few questions

You can't check his teeth. Incisors can look fine, but them molars can be a mess. Even vets have a hard time checking the molars.

Get your pig to a vet.

Re: New owner a few questions

I'm taking P-chan to the vet tomorrow. My parents don't think it's anything serious, but I KNOW something's up. His dropping are smaller and he doesn't seem to be urinating as much. I'm really worried!

Please pray for him until I can get him in there. I love him and I don't know what I'll do if something seriously wrong is going on. I know it can't possibly be scurvy. He gets greens everyday.

Is it true that spinach can cause kidney stones?

It was Mange

Just brought her back from the vets, he gave her an injection of cydectin I forgt to ask the vet.
1 Are there any side effects of this
2 Will the bedding be contaminated with mites?

Are there any good websites that outline which fruit/veg nuts seeds we can and cannot feed her?

here's some into from guinealynx

CYDECTIN (moxidectin) Pour-On is labeled for use in cattle of all ages and in female dairy cattle prior to breeding age. It is effective against a broad spectrum of important internal and external parasites, including Ostertagia, the most economically devastating internal cattle parasite in the United States, for 28 days, and against Dictyocaulus viviparus (lungworm) for 42 days

here's a link.

Warning:

Reposted from Guinea Lynx:

I believe that moxidectin is the same ingredient in the horse wormer Quest. I would never use it on a guinea pig, I don't even use it on my minis. The margine of error is just too small--it is too easy to overdose. The company that makes it claims that it is okay, but I know several minis have died of overdosing.

It supposedly kills the same species of internal parasites that ivermectin does, but is longer acting.

Gak!
Quest is BAAAAAAAAAD news for the reasons Lisam mentionned. When it first came out, my vet suggested we don't use it on small ponies because it's easy to overdose them. A guinea pig? Holy Molly! Unless it's diluted A LOT, I wouldn't dream of it.

Please see this thread and post your situation on that forum: www.guinealynx.info/forum...ght=eating

GOOD NEWS!!!

P-chan was dehydrated. His water bottle stopped working, but he's going back to normal! Thank God! I took him to the vet and she said he was in tip-top shape. Good thing! Just thought I'd let you guys know.

Re: GOOD NEWS!!!

So glad your pig is ok- I just had to tell you that P Chan is the Best name in the world!!! (My cat is named Rioga!)

Thankies!

I'm really glad you like his name! He is sick, once again. This time it's pretty serious. The doctor we went to this time didn't have the equipement to draw blood and so he said we would treat him for a respiratory infection. Let's pray that it's only that. My parents didn't feel like driving ALL the way to our other vet, who's TONS better, because it was too far. WHAT IF HE'S DYING! Parents sometimes just don't understand.

I just don't understand... I take amazing care of him, but he has been getting sick a lot lately. He's only 3 years old. Of course he was the runt of the family... poor baby. Hopefully, he'll be better really soon. Please pray!!!!

Cats are cool, I have a black cat named Emily Binx! ^_^ I like your cat's name too.

Re: Thankies!

They can take blood by simply overcutting a nail, cutting the quick a little.

I do hope he gets better - be sure to check the meds (anti-biotics?) you have been given are safe for guinea pigs.

Re: New owner a few questions

The anti-biotic is called baytril-60, the vet told me it was safe. My parents said it was the only thing we could do for him.

But, they needed to test the blood for kidney failure... I didn't like this vet. I wish they could have went to our REAL one.
