Hello everyone! My name is Vicky, and I am quite the pathetic cavy slave. I have been reading this forum for a very long time, but have never gotten around to actually posting. However, I am very thankful that I found this site, because now my two girls have a roomy cage, loads of veggies, Oxbow pellets, and Timothy Hay and everything else they need.

My two girls are Missy and Apple. Missy is a vocal black and white pig and looks partly abby, as does Apple, but the latter is white and tan with a brown and black face. I would love to show pictures but I haven't got a scanner.

I have a few questions, though. Are baby tomatoes okay for them? I don't like them, so when I ordered in the other day I picked them out of the salad I had, cut them up and offered them to the piggers. Later, I heard a sort of cough from one of them. I hadn't given them anything else new that day and I had never heard anything like that before. I was wondering if anyone knew what it was?

Anyways, thank you all for providing me with excellent information to help make my guineas lives better. If I hadn't found this website, they may of still been in a pet store cage with just some carrots or lettuce and vitamin drops in the water!

I've never had problems with baby tomatoes. My oldest sow loves them. Did you wash them very well after you took them out of your salad? Maybe they got a tiny taste of salad dressing.

They're fine in moderation. Some of my pigs won't eat them. They're kind of acidic and they can give your pigs' mouth sores if you overfeed.

My baby boar acts like tomoatoes will kill him. His girlfriend downstairs doesn't mind. She'll eat all the tomatoes he won't. :)

Thank you - the salad dressing theory makes sense, even though I thought I washed them pretty well. I'll be more careful if I find myself in that situation again.

Sabriel - mine are sort of like that. Apple doesn't really like strawberries, so she pretty much ignores them when I leave them in the cage about once a week. Missy seems to think she wants them, though, she'll run out of her hidey house, grab the strawberry and run back in really quickly, and not come out until its gone. Its so adorable!

Your girls sound so adorable! Mine hate strawberries, well, they don't really care for them. Oh well, I just eat their food if they don't like them.

Do you have a digital camera?

Is that Missy in your avatar?

The cough sound that you heard was most likely the sound a cavy makes when they eat too fast. Mine do it a bit during veggie time. It is just a quick 'hack' and they are fine.

Slap- Thanks! I was feeling so guilty about accidentaly feeding them salad dressing! :p

Yes, that's missy. Not the most flattering picture of her, but it was one my mother took when she came over once, and she has a scanner. She uploaded it for me when I asked and I cropped it down a bit so it would fit. Thats about the extent of my photo-altering skills. ;)

I grow cherry tomatoes for my girls. They absolutely love them!
