Hi everyone!! I actually joined up awhile ago and just got to posting here! My name is Kitty and I have only one pig currently. Her name is Rose. She came to me with alot of problems (upper respiratory infection and ring worm) but she is doing great! As it says on my profile I am married (to the sweetest guy in the world!)
Rose is VERY spoiled. She lives alone in a two level C&C cage. The bottom level is 2x4 and the top is 1x2. She LOVES to run up and down the ramp and loves floor time even more. She is very snuggly and love sitting on my lap while I watch TV. Rose also seems to find it fun to drag her giant stuffed animals(7 times her size) around her cage. She of course ignores the smaller animals. She is very attached to me. Often during floor time I'll take my school work into the pen and sit in a corner and she love to crawl all over me! She is, amazingly, self litter trained and very sweet tempered. She is my baby and I love her to death! Heres a picture. More later tomorrow I promise!

:) She sounds like such a great pig (and a great friend!). Her name suits her too.

I really hope so. I have to get some money first. Her vet bills nearly wiped me dry. Anyway, I plan on getting her a friend within a month or so.

Hi,
she is a very sweet girl. My boar Herkules would be a good match, colourwise, ;-) But he is not neutered and quite likely he is also too far away.

Good luck to you and her. I am sure you will have a lot of fun together, and even more fun when you find her some cavy company.

Rose is a very smart piggy to find a slave that would cure all her problems and spoil her rotten with a giant cage and lots of toys. She is looking healthy and sassy now.

She is my baby thats for sure! Thank you for all your kind words!
I hope soon to get her a buddy but for the time being I'm trying to work on clearing up her ringworm. After that I hope to get her a nice friendly female (hopefully one who can teach her the joys of veggies.

Thanks so much. She is spoiled. My husband always jokingly scolds me for spending all my spare money on her and not enough on myself!

Rose is a baby, she needs things. Let us know when Rose starts thinking about adopting a sister.

Thanks so much. I am really considering getting her a sister very soon. I will need to figure out an isolation area for the new girl before I can do anything. There are NO adoptions in Oklahoma that I can find and I hate to buy one...

Try Petfinder.com:I'm sure you would be surprised the facilities that privately do foster care and rescue. A large majority of the time it is people rescuing out of their homes. You will find that petstore animals often come with health problems and you will have yet more vet bills. Most rescues have their adoptees in great health or they can let you know about any pre existing illness. Good luck with your search and keep mind you could always adopt a neutered male as well.

Thanks for the idea but I've checked there, innumerable times and there are only rescues in Kansas and Texas. I'd love to adopt a new pig but I can't pay that kind of money to do so. I will keep my eyes pealed but there really aren't any rescues in Oklahoma. Not listed there or in the paper...Nothing.

You may also want to check on Craigslist , your local newspapers, veterinarian offices, and any animal shelters or rescues. Often with the offices, shelters, and rescues even if they don't have any cavies right now, they will be willing to put your name and number or email or a "Please Call" list if anything should come in.

You could also post some piggy wanted signs at the grocery, vet's office, work etc. A piggy will find you, I promise.

I just worry if I find one out of the paper it will be a breeding mill supplier or one who gets from a mill...I just worry.

I didn't think of that. If you post signs, you could be contacted by back yard breeders and such. You thought that through carefully and I didn't. Maybe I'll try something new, thinking BEFORE I type!

If you see someone adopting out their pigs in the paper, just make sure to ask lots of questions. If they say you can't have the cage, ask why. If they are giving up the animal, there is usually no need to keep the house unless they are breeding. It's pretty easy to get the feel for a person right off.

For example, I found 2 of my girls on Craigslist. They were classroom pets that the teacher never wanted, and finally decided to find a good home for them. She and I emailed back and forth and made an appointment for me to come to her house to get the girls. When I got there, she had the girls in the large Rubbermaid tub they had been living in, and she helped me load all of the extra bedding, treats, toys, bag of food, and smaller cage that she put them in when she cleaned the tub into my trunk.

Obviously, she was sincere about not keeping them, and she wasn't breeding because she gave me all of their things. I threw most of it out, but I took it from her because I didn't want another animal moving into a too small cage, on cedar, and eating yogurt drops and mix food.

Her students sent them with a few cards and little packages of carrots, cut up apples, and grapes. It was really very sweet. I kept the cards and mixed the carrots and fruit into the feeding routine for the next few days.

My point is that you can usually tell the good ones (even if they are a bit misguided about care), like the teacher, from the breeders who are just looking to get read of non-breedable stock. It just takes a bit of conversation and a lot of questions.
