I got Dusty about a week ago and yesterday we got him a friend, Smokey. They are both males and Smokey is just a couple months older than Dusty. We just introduced them to each other and all they did was go after each other(and not in the fighting way). They both are not neutered. If we do neuter them, will they stop going after each other?

?

Could you explain "going after" a bit more?

You mean like mounting? That basically IS fighting. If things don't work out, separate them and try again later.

You have quarantined your Guinea Pigs, right? You HAVE to QUARANTINE newcomers for a week or so before introductions.

Edited by bpatters: Zuidy, mounting is NOT fighting, and quarantine is for three weeks, not one. Please be more careful about the posts you make, and check your information out first. Thanks.

Most people here will tell you to read the guinea pig social life page and only separate if there is blood drawn. Mounting is totally fine and normal. It is too late to quarantine now really, since they've already been together. Hopefully you rescued your new one from a trusted rescue and you won't need to worry about illness. I think the big points are to give them lots of room at introduction so they can get away from each other, neutral territory and don't keep separating and putting back together because they will need to keep establishing pecking order each time they reunite.

Read Guinea Pigs Social Life -- the introductions section is about halfway down.

Neutering will probably not change their behavior. I assume that you mean mounting by "go after each other." It's perfectly normal and will last for a long time, although it will lessen as they get used to each other.
