So you mean to tell me you didn't think telling people that you leave you cavy unprotected in your yard that you wouldn't get people riled up?

Talk about writing for your audience.

Hello all,

Wow I was not expecting to read this when I got home, and I must honestly say that it is very childish, and extremely RUDE I dont think it is right and fair to me, I am new here and would like to have a good experience with Cavy Cages. So please respect me and my guys and gal and not argue on this thread. I have not done it to you guys or on any other thread.

Well anyway,
I do know quite a bit about gps and I also know there are people here who know alot more than I, so I am open for all advice and when I have questions hopefully I can have respectable people answer then and something like this does not happen again.

Why were their teeth filed? Did they have overgrown molars or something?

I'd still treat them all with ivermec just in case. I always do with new piggies just as a precaution. Thank you for adopting.

Hi Guys thanks for the replies, BUZZ and ROMEO are fine all is well, they just got a nice bath and nail clipping and there teeth were filed, they were actually Fine with that and I can barely Pick Romeo up but he love the bath, but no mites, chest is cleared, ears are fine.

I actually have one more, the animal shelter called me and told me they had a girl that came in on Sunday, she is reddish brown about a year old, she is really friendly, so the huge heart I have, I brought her home. , she is also fine, she does have a slit in her one ear but othet than that she is well the vet said it is or no harm to her and it healed fine. So she is in a pretty big cage 4x2 for now I really do not know much about her past owners but she is very loving cavy, she already cuddles, once she is calm I will get her a friend, probally this weekend, she will also get a c&c home. I am going to take pics of them tonight and take them to get devoloped so you can see me babies.

Your welcome,

Well they came from a bad situation and their teeth were growing back into their bottom gums and they vet said that they needed to file them. They probally never had wood or something to file them with. If you do not mind me asking what is ivermec and should I get some, the vet did not menchion anything like that but just alot of Vit C which I knew. Thank you,

Hey Christy do you have pigtures yet?

You know I dont really have a scale for them, I did not know they needed one, I have one for myself, curse that thing, LOL, but it is not digital. As for my pigstures, that is so cute, I am actually taking them to get devoloped in a while, so later on I will have them posted,

My piggies always have hay avaliable, this morning when I work up, my girls was all gone, and the boys, there pelletts were half way gone, and also all the hay. But no pain meds for them, I am just keeping an eye out for them, if I notice something I will take them back to the vet, but for now, they are all fine,

About the mite medicine, should I treat them with that even though the vet said that they did not have mites, he said they only thing I need to do is watch for kennel cough, cause there were in a room at the shelter with cats and small dogs. but they are fine no runy noses at all.

Hello all,

I have a few questions, hope you can help,

First my girl needs a name, I can not think of any, I will post a pic tonight, and you can see her and then let me know.. But in the mean time,

I thought lettuce was bad for gps, or is it just iceburgh.

Also I have my boys in the same room with my girl, not same cage. And they are going nuts, they are usually quiet and they are grunting at one another and chasing eachother, is that their way of showing dominence?

And is that ok, or is that something I should watch, as long as there is no blood, should I move my girl to another room so they do not hurt one another?

Also my boys are nuetered, (not by me), during floor time, can they be put with her under close supervision, what I am doing now is I bought one of those play pens for pets at Wal Mart and she is in that on the floor and the guys are running around. They sniff one another and talk alot, then I reverse it put her on the floor for about a hour and then the guys in the pen, where there is alot avaliable for them and it is actually roomy.

And how long should floor time be at one setting, and how many times a day?

There are some good names here: (broken link removed)

Yes, lettuce like romaine and red leaf are great everyday foods. Just avoid iceberg.

Yes, that is the way of showing dominance. They probably smell her.

Don't seperate them unless there is blood or one stops another from eating. If you feel comfortable moving her, do it, but it may not be nessesary.

Are you SURE they are nuetered? Better get them to a vet to find out. If they are, you can house one male with the female. But do not put more than one male with females.

Typical floor time is an hour or so. Or twice a day for half an hour. You can put them in floortime a few times a day for a long time. I wouldn't recommend lots of short floor times.

Yeah they are nuetered, They went to the vet yesterday, I will keep her there in the room and hopefully they will calm down.

But all of them can nto play together just keep them seperate, I am planning on adopting a girl for her this weekend. so she has friends, but when there are 2 sows and 2 boys, can they be together during playtime. Thank you.

In adpoting another girl, mine now is one, what age shoudl I get her friend, does it matter, I have been reading up on soem but nothing comes to mind, I would like to know from some one who has done it and how long the first time, any advice or referable sites could help.

Thanks for the advice, it is greatly appericiated.

If you get another girl, I would suggest spliting them up boy/girl boy/girl. They will be much happier and almost guarenteed to get along.

But unfortunetilly, you can't have 2 sows and two boars together. The boar will hurt the other trying to get both the girls. Only one boar per group of girls.

Thanks alot, Also I just found out my little ones love peppers, about giving them vegs and fruit should it be avaliable to them all the time, or put it in there certain times of the day, and how many times a day, like yesterday I gave my gps carrots last nightfor a treat and today this morning I gave them green peppers and one apple slice no seeds.

Thanks for being so helpful

Hi:

I usually give my GP's their veggies twice a day - breakfast and dinner. If I'm home during the day I will slip them more. Once or twice a week I will, as a evening snack give them some apple or orange.

They always have pellets and several times a week I will give them hay. I have found where my one female won't eat anything else if she has hay every single day - she would prefer to live on hay and romaine. I do give them 2 baby carrots every day - one in the morning and one at dinner.

I always have romaine, carrots, grean beans and apples on hand. Each week I will buy some different things - right now I have parsley and cilantro in the frig along with green peppers and tomatoes.

Remember - no all GP's like the same things - you just have to keep trying until you find several things they will eat.

Good Luck and can't wait to see pictures of your brood.

Guinea pigs do not get kennel cough. A vet can't just look at a pig and declare he does not have mites. They are microscopic and sometimes flare up during stress.

Did you say the boars were just neutered yesterday? They need to be kept away from any sows for 3 weeks at least because they can still have sperm in their system.

Christy- Your pigs need unlimited timothy hay, a cups worth of fresh veggies each per day, and I give mine unlimited pellets. If they are overweight, 1/8 to 1/3 a cup of pellets each a day works. Make sure you feed only one or two baby carrots each twice a week. Carrots can cause severe liver damage if given too often.

Good Luck!

Hi thanks for the advice,

My guys and gal have unlimted hay, and pellets, I did not know that that many carrots could hurt a gp, so now I will give them 2xweek. With they hay, what happens if that is all they want to eat, not the pellets. Is that good or bad? I am very new to this so thanks to all.

No my guys came to me already nuertered. About the vet, I am going by what they said to me, I have not see any signs of mites, like scratching. So I am unsure what you are really talking about. are you saying I should treat hem anyway?

About the cough, I was told by numerous people and my vet hat they can get respitory infections, like kennel cough, cause they were exposed to it, I am new to this so I am going by what I am told, I do not have expeoence like most do, but if anyone feels like I am doing something wrong, please let me know. I do not want to hurt my gps in anyway.

The piggies eat almost all the time. It may seem like all she is eating is the hay, because they constantly munch on it. But that is okay because without unlimited hay, their molars would grow too long and cause Malocclusion.

Pellets are not neccessary, so it's ok that they don't eat them that much. As long as they are munching through their hay and veggies, then you and them are ok

Yes, you can treat them anyway. It's entirely up to you. You can do it cheaply at home if you want

Gp's can get respiratory infections. Common symptoms are crust eyes/laboured breathing/runny nose

Hi Christy:

What you were told about is URI or Upper Respiratory Infection. The signs are cough, lots of sneezing, lethargic behavior, not eating and nasal discharge.

GP's are very prone to this type of infection and normally can be treated successfully with antibiotics.
