From what I've read, usually trouble swallowing has to do with a tooth problem.
It could be something like overgrown molars/tooth abscess/ or even elongated roots.
Did they look at her teeth at all?

Did he take x-rays?
If not, I highly recommend getting some xrays done to check for elongated roots/abscesses.

I second the xray. As someone who's had many tooth problems. Things can be very well hidden.

He's gonna check knot things and call me, if he can't find anything I'll suggest them.

Like has already been said, xrays are needed. Even with the most cooperative pig, the light-and-look method won't show much.

I hope your little guy (?) with the leg issues is doing okay. Don't want to stir up all the drama again but give your mum my deepest sympathies, I have fibromyalgia amongst some other conditions too so I can relate to her pain.

Sometimes my blood pressure goes way up when I see someone did something "wrong" or is really unable to act as quickly as perhaps they should, and they get attacked- especially when they are new. This only causes the OP to react defensively which is a natural reaction when someone feels attack, and creates nothing but misery and drama. That's why I'm always hesitant to open a "help something is wrong" thread.

I understand the OPs frustration, but she doesn't appear to understand what an exotics vet is. When someone believes something so strongly, it is next to impossible to convince them something different. I understand she is only 19, but if she wants to be a vet (which based on a previous thread I believe she does) she needs to open up her eyes and realize there is difference. I went to the website of several of the vets in Ashland, and they said exotics. You'll have a heck of an easier time finding someone to treat a guinea pig versus a reptile or bird. I have hundreds of vets in my own town (literally), and I would still have to drive to our local state vet teaching hospital to find a competent avian or reptile vet. Many vets I know are scared to deal with either. Of the vets in Ashland one even had the picture of a guinea pig on it.

OP - The reason I have been trying to help you find an exotics vet within a reasonable driving distance is your vet has prescribed a dangerous antibiotic and yogurt for your guinea pig. There are antibiotics that are not dangerous, and yet he has prescribed one that does carry a high risk of death. He told you to use lactose on a lactose intolerant animal. Instead of acidophilus, which is what he should've recommended. As amazing and wonderful as he may be, he is clearly not cavy savvy, and unless you take the time to educate him about what is and isn't safe, you might end up in a bad situation in the future with your pigs. I would hate for your to lose your pig because of a vet mistake, I have lost several horses and a dog because of vet mistakes, and these were people who WERE specialists in these animals.

I got her a probiotic that was vegetarian formula, says on the bottle no milk n no dairy.., guess what most other probiotics are made of... Dairy..., and I have been checking her breathing every few hours and she is no longer yucky sounding, she is really clear and it's not raspy or hard or anything now. I'm still watching her and whether or not 90% of you all are ring complete [email protected] about everything she really is doing better already.

and an exotics vet is one that treats animals that aren't the normal dog cat scenario, like snakes, bird and other more "strange" animal...... So quit acting like I am stupid about everything because I am not. I went back to my vets and everything last night( as stated) to discuss with him that the medicines were listed as dangerous.,, he looked into everything and couldn't find anything about what it done, and he had used it on other go before without any problems. We had to get her something or she could have died last night, and he didn't have baytril, bactrum or anything else like that, he even called actual pharmacies trying to find it, so get off your freakin pedals tool and quit being such a know it all, because quite frankly you don't.

Okay....I guess you don't want help. Even though you originally came here for help.

I want help, but not sarcasm, jerks, opinions on everything I do wrong, and smartelic-ness. I know it was a risk on the medicines, but would it have been riskier to not do anything. She is the kind of pig that is quiet ad hadn't done anything at all until yesterday and she made a big coughing noise and we knew something was wrong, and it was when my dad was almost home... So we immediately went to the vets w not just her, but 3 of our pigs.., and she is doing better already. Before the meds she was breathing hard and when you listened it was raspy and puffy sounding and she was pitiful. But now it sounds almost normal

Folks, this thread is over. It seems to me that courtneylushae has done about the best she can do under the circumstances, and some of the rest of you have gone beyond offering advice to piling on. Make your point once, and then let it go.
