On Monday I got two more guinea pigs from someone on craigslist. Mae is the female, she is white with a little black. Sebastian is brown with white. They are both long haired. She was spraying them with bronco fly spray for horses to get rid of lice. She had a ball for them to roll around in. And of course they have been housed together in a small pet store cage.

They are now in a 2X6 cavy cage seperated in the middle. I don't doubt that Mae is already pregnant. I am not taking the chance that she will give birth and get pregnant again. They both have an appointment with the vet on Monday. I know that advantage will take care of lice, however I am concerned about the previous use of the bronco fly spray. I don't want to take a chance of making them sick by mixing so many chemicals. Their fur is very course and dry. Will the advantage take care of any possible mites too? I can't remember, I'll have to look that up.

I wouldn't give them anything for the lice until you talk to the Dr. on Monday.
That sounds like some nasty spray.Poor babies, I am glad you rescued them.

Thanks, I thought there was a medication that would take care of both lice and mites.

Both of them had their wellness check today. They look good. The vet couldn't find any lice. She went ahead and treated them with revolution just to be safe. Don't want to take a chance of after quarintine infectining the rest of my guys because I didn't take precautions.
The vet is quite sure that Mae is pregnant. She felt 3 different peanut sized "lumps". The lady I got them from had them together since sometime in July but it seems as though Mae didn't get pregnant till later in August. She should be in with my other girls and comfortable (I hope) with them before giving birth.

Mae had her babies Saturday morning. Four little black and white cuties. I'll post pictures as soon as I can find the proper cord. I am little worried about the smallest one. It looks so fragile and doesn't seem to have as much hair as the other three. Of course I am always a sucker for the runt.

Oh, I can't wait to see pictures! You could always do things to help out the runt--pull the other babies out every once in a while, to give him/her a chance to nurse alone, you could give some critical care, etc. Poor little things!

A group picture.
The littlest one is doing great. (the one with the black face) I am really horrible at checking the sexes on the little ones so I am not sure who is male or female. I wanted to take them to the vet to see what sex each of them are, they want $90. I would rather find a reputable rescue and donate money to them if they could help me sex them. Would any one know of one in the Charlottesville Va area? I closest I know of is in Roanoke.

They are so adorable! I love baby pictures with their huge ears. I especially love the one of the far right. You could always just wait a week or so and then sex them, and go to the rescue if you aren't sure.

When my boys were that little it was hard for me to tell for sure. But it becomes much more apparent after a short two weeks. Even though I suspected they were boys on day 3, it was very clear before they needed to be separated from mom.

Mae is gorgeous! And those babies are so cute. I'm glad you adopted them before she gave birth. That is horrible about spraying them with fly spray. Poor little guys. Take care, Lynn

So last week I took mom and babies in to see what sex they were. I thought there was 3 boys and 1 girl. But it is two and two. I am glad I went. They were very nice and only charged for a wellness check on 1 guinea pig, about $40 less than what they originally quoted me.

I had hoped to put both the boys is the 3x6 with two other males. I figured it would be a long shot and there might be trouble when they got older. The one baby male was accepted, but Cuddle Monster harrassed the other till he climbed the coroplast and went thru the grids, falling to the floor. I am really glad he was not hurt. So now the other little guy is in a 2x6 with two other males. They sniffed him and then pretty much ignored him. I had wanted to keep them together(but didn't want to put them in a cage by themselves with adults there to help them along).
