Im now trying to convince my dad to let me adopt a neutered pig from a shelter by my house to be with my other guinea pig. But he's not convinced that its a 100% garentee that the pig is no longer furtal. Is there a chance that this could be true, could they mess something up during the opperation and the guinea pig could still reproduce? Or is it a 100% sure thing that if a guinea pig has been neutered that it will NOT reproduce what so ever?

Yes, if done correctly. The process is the same as for a dogs and cats. The testicles are removed.

You must keep the boy apart from any sows for 2-3 weeks after the operation though.

Have you read the neutering page at www.cavyspirit.com?

I got my boy neutered a couple of months ago.. so far I have no pregnant piggies! I would wait at least 4weeks just to be on the safe side.

I have heard that they may mess it up some how. I would not worry about that though, as it is EXTREMELY rare.

When you get a neutered pig from a shelter, he should come with some sort of medical records saying when he was neutered. I have personally not heard of any neutered boars that went on to produce a litter, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Remember that if you adopt any pig, you need to do a strict 3 week quarantine in a separate cage in another room.

yes, thank you, I'll make sure to do that if I get another one. Hope fully I can convince him to let me. Thank you all for replying

Wait if you have a boar, whats the point in getting a neutered boar? Sorry I may be a little confused.

I think the OP has a sow?

I would definitely get records saying that he was neutered, otherwise it could turn into our situation. We adopted a male and female that were together at our local shelter and they said that he was neutered and that's why they were housed together. Well, a couple of months later we became happy piggygrandparents to 4 little piggies. We made room for them but Gertie and Jack are now seperated!!!
