I have a male guinea pig that is 1 month old today. I plan on getting him neutered when he is old enough so I don't have any accidents (unplanned pregnancies) and so I can put him in with the girls.

Does anyone have any experience with neutering and advice for me? I really don't want to get another male nor do I want him to be lonely.

Find a good vet and bed him on towels after the surgery. I'd ask for pain meds and ABs. Pick him up and check the incisions daily until he heals. Make sure nothing tore or it looks clean. Monitor his weight and make sure he eats and poops okay. Having him on towels makes this easier.

Thanks! I read the neutering page over and over, but I still have other questions. I will be contacting my vet tomorrow for more information.

An update on my boar. I have had him neutered about 2 weeks ago. All went well thankfully. He is going back to the vet this week for a recheck.

Prior to his surgery, I questioned the vet extensively. I even made the dr go over the surgery protocol with me. His procedure basically followed protocol #2 on cavyspirit.

My boar has dissolvable stitches, but they are still there. About how long do they take to dissolve? Also, when can I put him back on his regular bedding?

I got my piggie neutered a month ago at the cambridge cavy trust. She said it was fine to put him straight onto his normal bedding (megazorb) but to keep him off of the grass for 2 weeks as to not get tetnus. I checked him daily. He didnt need any medication and took it all very well, didnt like being shaved though! He still has a couple off stitches that havent disolved x

A lot of vets won't neuter until they are a certain age, usually about 4 months old. So you might want to ask your vet if he is old enough to be neutered.

I already had my guinea pig neutered a few weeks ago. He was put on pain meds and antibiotic for 5 days. I was wondering when I can put him back on his regular bedding?

I made Kaluah's appointment today to have him neutered on 09/30. He is in a divided cage right now and desperately wants to live with his cage neighbor Sahara. I just feel guilty. I know this is the best solution, but I can't help but feel a tad sad that I'm altering his body forever and putting him through pain because "I" think it's best. Has anyone else struggled with these thoughts? Any adivce would help.:sorry:

Ask your vet. She/he will be able to tell you when you can. By 2 weeks after surgery, you would think it would be ok at that point. Just my opinion though. Wait till 4 weeks from surgery date till you put him in with girls.

Like I say i was allowed to put my piggie straight onto his bedding and I had him netured at the best place ever. x

I don't have Megazorb here. I don't even know what that bedding consists of. I was told to either keep him on towels or CareFresh to prevent infection.

Megazorb is basically a much finer form of CareFresh. Tiny clumps instead of large clumps. It is originally meant for horses but works very well with smaller animals. That is true about the towels or CareFresh, as shavings can get caught up in the wound and cause infection.

The US version of Megazorb is called CellSorb. However, I was only able to find it at a feed store. Hope this helps.

How much did it cost you

For neutering? In UK it costs anything from £30 - £100 per pig. In the US, it can cost from $30 - $250 per pig. It all depends on individual vet costs.

It cost me £60 to get Tails done and the cct x

If you are talking about neutering, it cost me $65 here, plus the pains and antibiotic.

My boar was doing good until a few weeks ago, 3 weeks after his surgery. He developed an abscess which was lanced and drained and had a drain inserted. He also had to wear an E-collar which he hated. Well somehow he kept getting out of his collar and when I would check on him after work, he would be sitting there looking up at me sitting next to his collar like "I didn't do anything, it just fell off." HAHA.

Well one morning last week, he got it off again, but this time, he chewed out his drain and stitches. I immediately took him to the vet. They gave me in addition to the chlorahexidine flushes, MalOtic which I am to apply after the flush. They also rigged up a harness to keep his E-collar on. He hates it and isn't very happy but it is for his own good. The abscess is healing well. I just don't want or need any more problems. We both have had enough in the past month.

I was quoted "A little over $400" at the VCA hospital here!

I hope he's healing ok.
