Hi. I just got a female piggie last night from a college student who is leaving the country to study abroad. I've been looking for a compainion for my Male skinny pig for a few weeks now. The only problem is that neither one of them is fixed! I'm keeping them in seperate cages don't worry! I was just wondering if anyone else had to get a guinea pig altered...and what to expect. My vet is calling me tomorrow to discuss the neutering of my Male, she's actually seen him before, and she's a small animal specialist. I'm sure she'll fill me in fine, I was jsut wondering what everyone else's experience has been....

Thanx!

I don't have an experience as I have two boars, but I do have a few words of advice. Keep them apart for a *minimum* of two weeks, three is much, much better, after the operation. You'll also want to use towels as bedding for at least three days afterwards, though a week or more is better. I hope that everything goes as planned, and good luck! =)

This is a great page on neutering https://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm. Stacks of info on how to choose a vet, what to expect and about their recovery.

I've had three boars snipped over the years - all operations and recoveries went smoothly, and a few weeks later they were certainly enjoying the benefits of their little op! Any operation is a risk, but get yourself a good vet with a great track record in this operation and the odds are things will go smoothly.

Good luck!

I've had one boar neutered, with a complication not directly related to his neuter - bacterial enteritis.

He's recovering now and enjoying the company of his two ladies.

Finally!

Finally I got an appointment to have Walter Fixed! But now I'm alittle worried that something might go wrong. I've been reading up on everything and anything that could possibly happen, and it's scary me! I think from now until his operation I'm not going to read up on this stuff! it's just making me nervous!

good luck with the operation!

I think any operation your guinea pig goes through will cause you huge amounts of stress (probably more than it does them in most cases!), but when it's a non-lifesaving operation, you always worry even more about how you'd feel if things went wrong. However, as long as you choose a great vet with an excellent record in this type of operation, the chances of things going wrong, even minor setbacks, are quite small.

Just think about how having the operation will benefit him as he'll get a buddy. It's good to know all that can go wrong so you're prepared incase things do - you'll be more likely to know what to do. But once all that's sunk in just concentrate on spoiling him and having fun with him as you usually do.

If you really do start seriously stressing about it, you can always just house them side by side. That way they'll still both get some companionship.

All the best with the operation.
