I see a lot of people talking about having a neutered boar with a herd of sows. I was just wondering, what is the benefit in this match up? Did it just come out that way, or was there real intent when you got your piggies to match them up this way?

Comedy Moment: (Side Note) I was just on the phone talking to my hubby about my future piggies (yeah? what's new? :D) and I mentioned we could call them Sandy, Dusty, and Ohio. I don't know why I said it, some things just fall off my tongue. It wasn't until I got off the phone that it dawned on me why that's so funny. Any one ever heard of Sandusky, Ohio? Think about it! :D

Time to bump.

Once it was time to find my rescued sow a friend, I found an ad on kijiji for a neutered boar who needed a new home. I knew I had to rescue him, so I brought him home. He has had a rough past, and is such a sweetheart. He has been the perfect match for my sow. They are wonderful together. I don't have any fighting or bickering. When Penny is in heat and Sheldon tries to mount her, she'll kick him with her hind legs. He quickly backs off, and I've only ever seen him actually hump her a few times. Other than that, they have zero problems together. They are a great pair!

Well, I originally set out to adopt a bonded pair of 2 boars. However, once I got to the rescue for my interview, the adoption coordinator asked if I would like to see another pair. Thinking that I had made my mind up (and who wouldn't want a little more piggie lap time?), I told her that I would love to. When she brought a pair back, she said, "This is Matt and this is Toni."

I naturally thought, 'Oh, great, 2 more boys.'
'Now, this is a neutered boar and a sow,'.
Yep, Toni is an adorable, wonderful, sweet, little black sow.

Matt (now Griffin) and Toni are a great pair. They get along really well, and hang out together all of the time. Griffin does hump her occasionally, but I think that this is because he doesn't quite realize that he's not, all there shall we say. Other than occasional humping (and I believe that it only happens when Toni is in heat) they get along just fine.

I like having a neutered boar; there isn't so much sensitivy round the back end, if you know what I mean. I am much more comfortable picking him up than an unaltered male. And, I have the peace of mind that no piggy babies will ever come from my pair.

I say, just adopt healthy pigs and live your life with them. Go with a same-sex pair or go with opposite sex (as long as the boar is neutered) and you will have fun with them no matter what.

I love my neutered boar/sow pair! It's a nice blend. My first piggy passed away and my other sow was left lonely. When we decided to look at piggies at our local shelter, that's where we found our neutered boy! My girl is especially bossy and I had a hard time finding a piggy she would get along with - until we found our little boy. I think it's mostly his super laid back personality meshing well with her high strung personality, but I definitely think she gets along better overall with males.

lol

So basically there's no real benefit to having both a sow and a boar? It's just personal preference?

Thanks for sharing with me every one, and being patient with me while I figure this out. Of course, I have time to think about it. There's no real hurry since I have to figure out my money first, but I'd like to have a founded idea of wants/needs when the time comes! :)
