Hi,
I think I've talked my boyfriend into making a whole second level to our 3x4 cage. What do you guys use as supporters between the levels? Thanks for the help!

Some people use grids, some use curtain rods, wonder bars, dowels, table legs, wood dowels. two grid wide cages my favorite is wonder bars because they don't have to sit in the cage they lay on the top of the grids, but that won't work for a 3x4 because they are only 2 grids wide.

Thanks Traysea, what are wonder bars? Where do you get them?

How do you attach the bars to the side walls and how do you attach them so they support the loft for the full weight of piggies or bunnies?

Bars, as in wonder bars? Or dowels and whatnot?

The wonder bars just sit on top of the grids and dowels and things of the like have to sit inside a grid hole. Or you can make legs with dowels/etc. to support the second level.

ohhhh the L brackets are really nice! I don't like the way the wood looks because it's not the color of the grids, I prefer the wonder bars to the wood but they only work for 2 grids across. I LOVE the idea of the L brackets though so much less bulky.

honestly, I'm not sure, most of the info I have read are about ppl using wonder bars but my cage is 56" x 56" which is I think close to 4 x 4 grids (I'm not using grids but one of those playpens that I shaped to be in a square with a coroplast tray inside). so with that material being different, I havent been inventive enough to figure out how to support a second level which I would probably make using grids....

Traysea : I LIKE the idea of L brackets as well!

wonder bars definitely won't fit that wide of a cage.

With a full second level I think you will need to do the 2x2 wood (or dowels) like spydoc said to span the whole top or the grids in the middle are going to bow. I don't think L brackets will work for that wide of a cage unless they are really long. Personally I don't like legs inside the cage either.

For my loft, we put grids (attached with the plastic things that come with storage cubes and zip ties) underneath the coroplast floor of the loft. We later decided to also add a wooden dowel down the middle for extra support. We attached the dowel to the grids of the cage with zip ties in many areas to keep it in place and get the support we were looking for. It has worked out great so far! The dowel is underneath so it doesn't really show.

If I needed to use them, I would paint them. I have wonder bars for my cage though.
