It looks like the piggie I'm going to adopt wont be available for another week or so. Here's my question:

Should I go ahead and move my current piggie out of his store cage (one of the x-lg ones) into the new, big cage or just wait until I get the new piggie?

What do you guys think would be best?

Thanks.

Kelly

Wait till you get the new pig.

I agree with Slap. This way when you introduce them, they will both be on neutral territory. If you put your current piggie in there, he will probably start marking territory and when the introduction happens, it'll take longer to sort out things on the dominance chain.
Hope this helped and good luck with your new piggie. :)

I have different opinion: I suggest moving your piggy into the new cage and using the XL pet cage as the quarantine for the new piggy. In three weeks when you are sure the new pig is healthy, disinfect the cage they will live in and remove smells with a vinegar and water mix. Then try the cavy dating game:

Congratulations on your new piggy!

I agree with Ketus. You will need to quarantine for 3 weeks for intro's. One pig will need to be in the large new cage and one in the old cage. But you will need to quarantine in different rooms.

The piggie is in quarantine now so I know he'll be infection free. That is why I have to wait to get him. The shelter's policy (it's a piggie shelter not a animal shelter) is to make sure they are really healthy before they are adopted out. >Will I still need to quarantine them in my house too?

I dont think so. If the shelter is sure that the pig is healthy, then it is. I think you could move your current pig into the new cage OR wait. It depends where you want to introduce them to each other. If you are planning on doing inside the new cage, I would agree with kat and say wait. But if you are introducing them on a couch or something, you could move him now. I think it could work either way.

If you are positive that your current pig has no mites or illnesses then you will only need to quarantine for a couple of days so that the new pig can kinda get used to the new environment before being introduced to the current pig.

Thank you all. I appreciate your advice.

I think you should wait till the other pig gets there, and you introduce them both. That way (even if it is disinfected), the pig you currently have won't recognize the place as his own. And it may be stressful adding another pig in a large environment as it is... I just think you should wait.

thanks. I guess I'll just try to give brownie as much floor time as I can until then to make up for it.
