name change?

Is it possible to rename a guinea pig that has been adopted? Or would it confuse the poor girl? If I would decide to call her something else I would try to make sure it sounds just like the name her previous owner named her. Thanks again for all the help I've gotten from you all.

It would definitely confuse an animal like a dog, but I think you'll be okay with a guinea pig! Even though two of mine respond to their names, it's just about the voice and pitch as if anyone else calls their name, they're completely oblivious to it - no response at all, even if they try and copy how I say it! Your pig will settle in and get to know you, and I don't think a new name will affect that.

My pig Bob was previously called Peggy, but all my female pigs have boys' names so that had to go when I adopted her!

I think it's fine. Like Treen said, it's more about the person that's saying it than the actual name. It should be perfectly fine.

I changed names in 4 of our piggers and there was no problems at all.

Thanks. I think I already have names picked out. Even though my husband doesnt like one of them. I think I will name the baby Jo and the mom Marmee. Thanks again for all the help.

Rocinante, that was a bit inappropriate. He was simply asking if they are used to their names being called, and if it would confuse the poor thing. If you've owned a dog, you'll know that they would be a bit confused if you called them a different name. It's nice that this person took the time to make sure it was ok.

of course it should be fine to change the name. for all you know, the previous owners may have never called the guinea pig by its name or even interacted with it much. so the piggie wouldnt know its name anyway.

Thanks. I only wish my husband thought so too. He doesn't get Marmee and his friends mom is named jo. So I might have to think of other ideas.
