How often should i get my gp nails clipped? One toe on each foot has a longer nail than all the other nails. Is that normal? I got his nails last cut in October or September.

Just clip them when ever they look long or uncomfortable. And yes it is normal for some nails to be longer than other ones. :)

I clip their nails about every 3 weeks even if its only a tiny amount.

You should clip about once a month.

I've got a tip for nail clipping. Place your pig onto a tennis racket, and get someone to hold this racket up. Go underneath it and clip. Worked like a charm for me =)

Ok I am going to get his nails clipped soon. That is a good idea Piglet! I take mine to someone to get them done because I don't really want to do it wrong and hurt them by accident.

Can you but a nail clipper for gp? Where? And how much do they cost?

A normal nail clipper works great. Like this one

Neat idea :). My wife and I will try the tennis racket next time. Normally we use the method that GL describes

https://www.guinealynx.info/nails.html

We do it about once a month or when it hurts to hold them, whichever comes first. We had some help the first time we clipped our pigs' nails. It's getting easier each time we do it.

I read a really great tip about shining a flashlight from underneath the nail. This helps us spot the quick in our dark-nailed cavies.

Thank you Ketus15. I have a boar with all black nails that I just adopted. I was really nervouse about cutting his nails.

I didn't think a regular nail clipper worked for gps?

It does. Whenever I need to cut the pigs nails I hold him to my chest(his back facing me) and I cut his nails with regular nail cutters. Luckily, my boys are usually patient with me and let me cut about two nails every time I pick them up(it takes several tries). And for the black nails, one of my boys has black nails and all I do is cut off the sharp part and he has yet to bleed.

My piggies squeal bloody murder when I trim their nails. I have to have someone hold them while I trim them.

They alow me to cut it just as long as I dont hurt them at all. Sometimes they get skittish at first but then once I get them comfy they are fine.

That's a great idea! Do you have any pics?

Is there a danger of the piggies dislocating a leg while squirming in the racket?

I am going to try the tennis racket tip! It sounds like a great was to do it!

I don't think there would be any danger. To be honest, when Furlong was on the racket he didn't even realise I was clipping his nails. I gave him some food for distraction and it worked.

I use dog nail clippers.

Yes I find dog or cat nail clippers work well for me but I have used human ones too.

I have found the clippers sold for Rabbits and Guinea Pigs work great. I like the little guide on since I clip the nails alone. I try not to cut too much which means I need to do it more often - about every 4 to 6 weeks, but I'd rather do it often than experience a mishap.
