Hi everyone,

My guinea pig recently received a treatment from the vet for URI .
I sent her to the vet about three weeks ago I just got her back yesterday!
They said she's doing fine now. However, it seems like she still have crust in her left eye and I was wondering if that is just a left over from the infection or if it means that she has been susceptible for another URI?
Is it possible for the guinea pig to come down with URI multiple times in their life?

Thank you.

Yes, pigs can come down with multiples of any infection throughout their lives. Some severe URIs require multiple rounds of antibiotics to knock it out.

Is she showing any other signs of illness? How is her weight? Was the crust leftover from her stay at the vet, or did it show up after bringing her home?

Thank you so much for your reply!
She isn't showing any severe signs of illness that I have seen before when she was ill with URI.
She is sneezing a couple of times a day but I'm sure how relevant that is to the URI...

As for her weight, she has been eating, drinking, and pooping well. Her weight actually increased! She's gotten a lot bigger.

And as for her crust, I didn't really take a close look at her right when I brought her home back from the vet since I wanted to give her some alone time to get use to her home again...
So maybe about 16 hours after she was released from the vet, I noticed a crust in her left eye.

So do you think it's possible she has come down with URI again?

It may not be that she came down with another URI as much as she may not have completely kicked the first one. Obviously I cannot be sure if this is the case.

Sneezing is a sign of URI. I would keep a close eye on her and make sure to weigh her every day. Clean off her eyes and see if anything else develops. If she were my pig I would make sure the sneezing stopped, the crust went away, that her poops look normal, her activity stays normal, and that she didn't lose any weight. If any of those didn't happen, I would be back at the vet.

Why did she stay at the vet all that time? If you end up taking her back, ask the vet to prescribe the antibiotic for you to give her at home.
