Hey all - question. My husband and I want to make a 4x4 cage. We currently have our beginner cage which is a 2x4. We plan to make that a loft area - probably a kitchen area.

However, when checking out the sites that sell C&Cs they don't show anything in that large of a square. Any advice? Is this too big or will it be too hard to "capture" a fleeing piggy?

Let me know your thoughts.

As a post script - we have one pig now (we lost his brother on New Years Eve), but we are planning to add to the herd over time.

Thanks,
Erika

The "standard" width of a C&C cage is 2 grids wide, so you probably won't find any that you can purchase in a "kit" that is 4x4. However, these cages are so easy to make you can gather the supplies yourself and assemble one with your Hubby.

I made myself a 3x5. I have to admit, at 3 grids wide, it has maxed out my ability to reach across it. I guess accessability depends on if you plan on having your cage on the floor or on a table. Mine is on an 18" platform. If you put it on the floor, then you could step inside it for cleaning and piggy catching.

Sorry to hear about your piggy passing. I hope the New Year brings new buddies for you and your family.

Here's a few links to help you out.

A 4x4 should be no problem, and how you set it up will be the determining factor in how easy it is to catch your pig. Know the limits of your reach, and design space around the cage as needed.

What type of bedding do you plan on using?

I love cages that are greater than 2 grids wide, especially with multiple pigs. My 5x3 has helped my herd of 4 pigs get along fabulously. Good for you for movin' the pigs on up!

All responses were very useful to me. I'm new to blogging and forums so I'm not sure what a PM is... I never really thought about how far a 4 foot reach would be so 3 foot would probably work better for me. I'm on 5'3" to begin with.

If you have space to maneuver around 3 sides of the cage then you could easily clean a 4x4, since your furthest point would be 24" from any side. I'm just over 6' tall and can reach across 3 grids no problem when cleaning.

I have 2 2x5 in a L shape(so kind of 2x10) and at the joint where the two 2x5 meet I have a hard time reaching the back corner. The cage is one grid off the floor, And I'm 6' tall with long arms. Reaching will be a huge problem IMO, unless your able to circle the cage or atleast get to 3 sides.
