When my pig had mites I noticed these things-
1) He scrathced a lot
2) He had white flakey stuff in his hair (almost like dandrift)
3) He had spots where he started losing hair
4) He squealed when I picked him up
5) When I would pet him I would get itchy (vet said it was from the mites)

It could be mites or another parasite. About the sore spot I don't know, I didn't think they were supposed to have sore spots. Another possibility he doesn't like being touched in that one spot.

It's probably mites, but it could be fungus, or even lice. You'll need to go to a vet for sure. Some signs are:

small scabs
excessive itching
whimpering while itching
hair loss

It starts on their bottoms most often. I hope they get better!

Ya mncavylover's right, it probably is a parasite. I forgot to add they get these small red bloody scabs. Take the piggy to the vet.

thanks

thanks, im gonna take him 2 the vet ASAP it looks like mites. The spot is near his but and he looks like he has dandruff, and tho i cant really tell because he has alot of hair it looks as tho he has a scab on the spot.
thanks again,
tom

Ok, great! I hope it goes well.

how did the vet visit go?

oh no =(

I was actually going to post a similar question. My hairless guinea pig seems to have all the symptons of a parasite! How do they get this?? I thought the other day that one of my other pigs bit his nose, but now I think it's something else. =/ The spot on his nose is all white and flakey now. He's been straching alot, and now he's dragging his bottom on the cage. I should take him to the vet right?

YES! Take him to the vet right away.

That's mites. Yes, get him into the vet as soon as you can. Good luck to both of you! =)

keep us posted on how it goes. Good luck!

no mites

i brought the pig 2 my friends at a local pet store and they checked him out for me. they said he just has dry skin. so thats a relife.

i wouldn't trust the word of the pet store clerks. they have kind of developed a bad reputation on this site. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just saying that you should probably go get it checked out with a proper vet as well.

You need to get it to a vet. From what I hear, it definitely does have mites and needs to be treated. Some mites can kill. I'm not saying they didn't try to help, but sometimes even the people with the best intentions are wrong. Please take the pigs to a vet as soon as you possibly can, it's the only way they are going to get better. Good luck!

Yes, please do take them to see a qualified exotic vet. Good luck!

i understand why alot of petstores have a bad rep but i trust the guy i brought him to. because he used to work at an animal shelter and saw mites on guinea pigs alot. he took abot 10 minuts to examin the 1 spot that my pig doesnt like being touched and didnt see any signs of mites. also the pig is getting better wen i pet him hes not squealing any more. if my pig starts scratching or i see a sign of mites i will bring him to a vet.

well...all right

anyhow, I'm glad your piggy is feeling better! : )

OK, I know I said I have my girls a good going-over, but guess what, I think they have mites! I was petting Pineapple yesterday and a clump of hair came out and today I noticed tiny white flakes in her black hair. I took her to the vet and they showed me how to give them both the Ivermectin shots and we're on the road to recovery!

Oh no! how did she get them? has she been exposed to any other pigs besides your own lately?
Did you get her recently and from where did you get her?

We bought them in April from PetsMart and they have been to the vet a minimum of three times since then (URI) and looked clean. They haven't been with any other pigs, but we were at the county fair a couple of weeks ago and held a couple of piggies and I don't know if it is possible to bring them home on your clothes?
