I just found out my pigs have either Mites or lice. The eggs are white and on the fur, the bugs themselves are an orangish yellow color. Any pictures someone can show me? Is there anyway I can get of them myself like using dog shampoo/powder, or Lice shampoo (RID?) before I see a vet? Also, can people get them too, or is it just Pig Lice. I allready fought that battle before, don't want to again.

You absolutely must take them to a vet. Guinea pigs are way too sensitive to try to treat or diagnose your self. Get them the proper care.

Jeez.

You don't have to get angry.... Just a question.

There is hope without the vet.

Wal Mart sells something called a Robi Comb. It is a battery operated comb that electricutes the bugs. Painless to pigs and humans alike, it costs about $25 but is worth every penny. Shampoos are invasive and really don't work.

Just follow the instructions and you will be rid of the bugs in no time!!!

Good Luck!!!

Two drops of Advantage or Revolution (for dogs) behind each ear also works great for ridding lice and is perfectly safe.

Really? I would think something so strong (especially for dogs) could hurt them? I do need to get a restock of Advantage for my small dog and 2 cats (the cats have to get it in small dog too because they are to big for just cat) And you are positive it wont hurt them?? Have you done it personally? Just wanna make sure, don't mean to be picky :)

And about the robi-comb, there are eggs all by her ears and eyes and no way am I going to put it near her face... So how can it work If i can't get them all??

Thanks for all your suggestions :)

Yes it is safe! You don't use the whole bottle like you do on dogs and cats, all you need is 2 drops behind each ear. I use Revolution all the time on my rescues and it helps mites too. My vet and many other rescues use it too. So yes, I have used it personally.

Thats why I use Revolution, gets the lice and eggs and it's all gone with in two or 3 days.

I didn't know you could use the Revolution on the pigs. That's a great idea!!!

I learned something new today!!!

:O! Yay! I did some further research on it and my Mom is taking me to petsmart tonight to buy some! I informed the person i bought my pigs from and she never even heard of pig lice, so I told her about the Advantage. She's checking her pigs now and is going to call me back. I'm pretty sure that's where my pigs got them from, because we've only had them a couple weeks. I gave them a bath today to clean em up a bit before I put the advantage on.

Where does the lice come from? Can it come from their littering? I use bagged timothy hay and bagged Aspen bedding. The hay is in a small bag we keep inside, and the litter is bought by big bags and stored in the garage/shed.

Thanks so much!!! If we couldn't of fixed the lice problem, my mother was going to get rid of them (they are going to be class pets and lice + school children = Not good!) And I love them so much allready I couldn't bare to let them go! Thanks again!!!!

Cat advantage?

We found some unused Large cat Advantage here at home (our cats weigh 25 and 18 lbs...) So we used a drop behind each of the piggies ear. I looked up to see what kind of advantage to use (Cat or dog) and I saw no real favorite so I used the large cat. this OK? We only put 1 drop behind each ear. The pigs took it very well. Thanks Again
